But yeah... prices are up. At the beginning of the year, my monthly budget for groceries and household conumables was $800/month. It is now $1,150/month.

This is what kills me. I used to get pissed if we were spending over $1200 because it meant we weren’t watching our budget and buying excess.

Now our strict budget is $1200 and I don’t think it’s possible to go lower without an extreme “beans and rice” kind of grocery list.

For the OP’s main question:

Meal Tonight:
1) Golden Platter chicken nuggets ($13/pack at Costco - get about 5-6 meals out of it depending on the kids. We all ate some tonight. I had five. So, $3/person)

2) Frozen sweet potato fries ($10/pack at Costco. About $1/serving).

3) 1lb bag of broccoli ($6-$8/4 lb pack at Costco. So $2)

4) Rice ($1)

5) Honey Mustard ($.25)

We call this “Chick Fil A” rice bowls and it’s good for nights when we don’t have much planned. About $6-$8 for the meal? Fed four people.

Meal two nights ago:

1) Turkey Meatballs (2 lbs ground turkey, sleeve of ritz, little apple sauce, pecorino cheese, seasoning, green onions, herbs from the garden. Not sure how much this but I’d estimate around $15)

2) Fusilli with olive oil, garlic, and pecorino (Around $4)

3) Honey carrots (carrots, butter, honey - say $4?)

This meal is around $20-25 but it feeds us two nights plus a few extra meatballs for my lunch today.

Less steak for sure, and making sure to eat leftovers instead of waste more than before.

Today the Sams in Covington had their big packs of chicken breasts $5 off each pack.

Basically $13 for 6 lbs.

I will…

Use 2 lbs for 5 salads for lunch this week

Use 2 lbs for chicken spaghetti in instant pot

Use 2 lbs for bbq ranch chicken and pair that with half a bag of fresh broccoli that I’ll roast, and 2 boxes of Walmart Mac and cheese that cuts 42 cents each

I’ll break up the other pack into 3 2lb frozen bags of chicken.

Among other things I got at Sams today:

3 lbs of grapes for less than $4

130 laundry tabs for $19.48

45 rolls of toilet paper for 22.68

5 lbs of shredded cheese for $15.48

I cook most days or cook enough to have leftovers. Just my husband and myself at this point. I plan meals around protein that is on sale and buy enough for the freezer for future meals.

Prices are crazy but I’m not spending much more than I used to .. I just plan better and little to no waste anymore.

Strangely, my Costco ran the exact same deal. Interesting price comping.

It's some variation on soups, sandwiches, and pastas (or their leftovers) for every meal. Three hungry teenagers who will eat anything not nailed down--this food thing is getting tough.

I make my own bread, my own protein bars, meal prep every meal (usually smoke some type of meat for the week), and buy most meat at my local butcher shop that has 40% off on their frozen meat

Still pay ~$300 to 350/month for food.

We still eat pretty well, quality wise. We cut back on the overpriced dining out and started cooking more. We've done quite a few YouTube recipes....pausing the video as needed throughout the preparation. Protein breakdown - salmon once a week, beef twice, and chicken usually 4x.

I know most of you can not do this, but those that are single or married and you have work from home jobs, consider leaving USA.

I know that sounds crazy but there are so many better places to live that are a 1/5 of the price. You can save so much money, have a higher quality of life and retire 20 years sooner.

I spend about $150 a month for my girlfriend and I. We eat very clean and 80% of that is for steak, chicken, rice, fruits and vegetables. All food is from local farmers, not mass produced big chain food.

Back in the late spring I started stockpiling canned goods, some extra rice and took advantage of sales on chicken breasts because I figured food prices would be rising due to Russia's war with Ukraine and Biden's war with common fricking sense.

The wife was annoyed with me when I was doing it, now she's dipping into the stash "because the price of food has gone up so much".

Made Chicken / Sausage Gumbo Saturday and paid $3.99/lb for Chicken THIGHS!

At this rate "cheap" gumbo will be more than seafood gumbo just a few years ago.

Lots of chicken and pork. You can still get pork tenderloin at sams for like $9 and we get 2 meals out of them.

I only buy steak now when it's on clearance.

Me and the misses order sushi every Friday. Take out and it runs $100. Filet mignon every Saturday. Life is too short for shitty food.

First sentence is true. Second is false. I find restaurant prices insane these days.

Whatever we want. We’re not changing our meals just because they cost a few dollars more. That’s silliness.
