I was talking about this a couple weekends ago with some of my wife’s family that are liberal. Everyone actually came to an agreement that the only way to fix this shite is to overhaul education as a whole. You start canceling student loan debt universities are going to go nuts charging whatever they want for tuition (even more so than they do now)

I’ll ignore the morality of forgiveness discussion and just let you know that you can actually request a refund for anything you’ve paid in the freeze. So if you seriously think it’s going to happen get your money back and park it in a HYSA until the bill is due

How the HELL does a commonsense post like this acquire 2X DVs vs UVs on a Money Board?
Student Loan Debt Cancellation is a huge !F*#& YOU! to those who did the right thing and paid their debts.

The only way that would be fair is to have it be means tested, and any forgiven loans are recouped from the school instead of the taxpayers.
That will punish schools for excessive tuition and bogus majors.

People who take personal responsibility and pay their debts are not who the administration is targeting with the idea of cancellation so it'll never happen.

You actually can get a refund for every dime you've paid during covid. The caveat is if you paid off the loan, they can't refund it. It's part of the fine print of the program. I can't speak for places like SoFi, but the traditional places like Great Lakes, etc., will refund you back your payments if you request it as long as the loan was not completely paid off.

Why is the discussion just about student loan debt? If they want to be “fair” just “cancel” a certain dollar amount of debt for everyone, irregardless of what it was used for.

I'm not picking on you because your logic isn't bad. But this kind of logic is how you crash the American system.
You abruptly escalate both public debt and inflation. Which is what we functionally did by sending everyone covid checks under both Trump and Biden.

mad because I paid them off during the freeze
Well, that was stupid.
What about those who paid theirs off well in advance, because they got worthwhile degrees and lived frugally to pay theirs off ASAP. Do they get a refund? They deserve it the most.

It’s impressive how well state universities adapt to the federal funding game. When I was in the military they paid 80% of credit hours up to 175/hr. for grad school. Coincidentally, my university charged $175/credit hour. Feds subsequently increased the reimbursement to $250/hr. Lo and behold, university increased tuition the following semester. With the advent of online education, they got the green light to print money. Want an MBA? That will be $500/hr on campus…but you can choose to do it online at your own pace for the reasonable price of $1250/hr.

This has been a major unintended effect of government student loan programs. Increasing the amount students could borrow gave the universities the power to increase tuition and student fees. And costs of education have therefore increased many times faster than inflation.

Yes. If they cancel student debt not related to fraud, then yes anyone who paid off their loans needs a refund or multi-year ( 10 year ) tax break.

Did I miss something, I thought that he was paying off one particular school because it defrauded its students?

Why?
Because you didn’t get your free money?
We gave TRILLIONS to the fricking banks in 2008.
Giving that trillions to working citizens (which debt cancellation essentially does) would have been a way better thing.

What about someone like me who worked my way through college? My grades suffered as I worked 40-50 hrs a week and still took a full load class schedule but I made it through when I could have just fricked off and had a chunk forgiven. I’d like a refund on some of mine too.

In America you’re never rewarded for doing the right thing. Act like a crackhead and the government will provide.

Same reason the mortgage interest deduction was uncapped while the student loan interest deduction was capped and means tested: because irregardless isn't a real word.

Let there be no cap to write the interest off of the loans
That’s bullshite
