I agree it doesn't solve the root cause but would lead to much higher value of money paid back to the government. It could end the whole forgiveness talk though because literally the only people who would have to pay it back "have a means to".

I just don't see them leaving the loan game because of how it would disproportionately impact the different demographics that the government likes keying on.

It's not, they want to give essentially everyone forgiveness when they're talking about single filers up to $150k and married filers up to $300k.

Single people making $140k and married households making $290k dont need any forgiveness.

This is all a vote buying scheme and nothing more.

It takes a while.

With tuition increases there are a lot of people with doctoral degrees who accumulated 300k or more of debt between college and graduate school.

I don't think it makes financial sense to become a veterinarian or public attorney in most cases today.

The solution can not be debt forgiveness though. It makes no sense for everyone else to assume the debt equally when they didn't have a choice. Forgiveness also doesn't address the ongoing problems with future graduates also needing training at more reasonable costs than 50k a year in tuition and housing.
