paying cash for depreciating non income producing assets is a good position to take

Some of you would literally borrow for every expense of life.

I have had to borrow to buy cars in the past but not in the last 20 years. I understand completely the argument of investing the money instead but I also understand the risk of such investments much better than some of you.

Save your borrowing power for appreciating or income producing assets whether it a house or a commerical lawn mower to start a mowing service.

And if you can’t buy, then don’t expect to drive to where the bus won’t take you?

How dumb?

Haven't had to use this guide in ~10 years, only a 1 year bump - thought it would be longer!

Wife wants a new car this year so we will be test driving this weekend with plans to buy in the early summer. I know power has shifted to the dealers over the last few years with the lack of inventory, but seems to be shifting back, so hoping we can utilize some of the "Will Cover" guide to get a good deal.

We are preparing/budgeting and doing our research on the cars, so for now I am just looking for any updated tips on going to do test drives at a few places....I am absolutely dreading it as I hate the whole car buying process. We will bring copies of our driver's licenses and be clear on our buying timeline (So we hopefully can get in and out), but curious if there is anything else we can do to prepare and make this as painless as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Must not hate it that much to draw it out over the course of 4 or 5 months instead of a week or two.

Useful response, thanks.

We live a couple of hours away so we are narrowing the list while we are in New Orleans.

Big purchase for us. Will take our time, but would prefer not getting trapped at a dealership for an entire day.

Just say you are in the research phase, trying to decide between multiple cars. They will bring you on a test drive and see you on your way quickly enough. Just don't ask them for the best price they can give you. You'll be there for hours.

Check out Tomi Mikula (Delivrd) on social media / youtube. Posts good tips and real negotiations. Basically says after you find which vehicle you want, do all talking and negotiating from home on the phone.

Bruh, that's when you use your 2 feet and walk out, they'll call you with a good deal especially with the industry being a shite pile of stacked inventory now. I don't see the point in waiting 3+ more months if they are offering you huge discounts.

I started looking last week. Went to two different places and didn’t like the original price. I walked out and haven’t heard back since

Do research, narrow down, go see in person, then email multiple dealerships with the car you want. Negotiate via email and get them competing for your business on an out the door number.

No dealer is going to give you a legitimate out the door number over email. Go in person, show them you’re serious.

I've been texting with a dealer in Virginia and he has given me an OTD price via text. Sent a picture of the breakdown from MSRP to OTD

Maybe it’s a buyers market idk. Every time I’ve tried this, they refuse. I always get asked “so when can you come in to see the car?”

Yeah I’m not getting much traction with any of them either. I can’t even get them to budge on the BS “care package” they added to the price much less the overall price
