What does this have to do with anything? Comparing your base starting rate to another industry makes no sense unless you’re only after money regardless of industry. Does he want to work in finance? Then go get a job in finance and move your way up. The number on the starting pay for an out of college graduate from a non prestigious school without past experience essentially means nothing. Go get a job and experience and then work your way into the industry. Sacrifice, effort, and experience are what build success.

any decent paying job

A recent graduate from a mediocre school isn’t going to get that without serious connections. I started at 42.5K with a Masters and a few years later I’m earning much much better. And getting that entry level job took me two years, and I was open to relocating.

20/hr would put them ahead of 30% of America. Take that job and live like a college student for a year and then turn it in a much better job. I took a job out of college for 12/hr out of college in 2007 and gained experience and 6 months later landed a job making 80k due to the experience I had at the first job. Sorry they want to live the upper middle class lifestyle their parents live right out of college. And who doesn’t want to live on their own? And I stand by a studio apartment in a decent part of town is under 1k. I know where I live a friend still rents and she rents a studio in a desired neighborhood for 750 a month

How can he not live on his own making 20/hr? A studio in Louisiana can be what 600-700?

Bruh $600-700 would be straight hood. That wouldn’t get an apartment at El Cid. He may be able to get a 2 bedroom and split it at $700/person with a roommate

Finance is an interesting degree for post graduation jobs. If you don’t do enough in school and you don’t have connections, you could be a barista or selling insurance. If you get a solid GPA and do a few internships you can be working Wall Street for $250k/yr out of college

Move to DFW, Texas tomorrow, trust me. It’s not just job opportunities, social aspects as well.

Yeah you better be finding some roommates if that's what you making and that's if you are clearing 20 @ hour.

What were his grades like? Students with less than a 3.0 GPA usually have their applications thrown in the trash.

What kind of relationship did he have with his finance professors? They are the KEY to finding good jobs in your field.

Did he have an internship during his time at Nicholls? Internships afford students the experience they lack.

Finance majors usually take a bunch of accounting courses. He could get his foot in the door with an accounting job, then transition into finance side of things.

If all else fails, how does he feel about studying for an MBA?

I would become a lender in the commercial departments for a bank….or get into insurance with a major insurance group.

Learn everything about lending to developers, businesses, farm operations, etc.

He will have to start as a junior analyst or portfolio assistant. Then learn everything about credit, underwriting, lending.

If I could go back and do it all over, I would get a finance degree and learn all about banking or insurance.

Some of the insurance guys that work for the big companies make insane amounts of money.

In Louisiana, finance degrees are great if you are numbers based guy or gal with good customer relationship skills.

Then he gets to compete against all the SMU, TCU, UNT, DBU grads on their home turf with their connections. I’m not saying don’t apply there, but no need to move before getting a job.

Yeah truth hurts sometimes.

Is he in decent shape? He can commission and be a contracting/finance officer in the US Army. Pay is way better than entry level around here, great benefits and a real pension. If he doesnt like active duty he can go Guard or Reserves and still get a retirement.

You can try the AF but everybody knows that its the better branch so they can be very selective. Especially for officers.

Quantity. You can get a bullshite finance job making $50k-$60k if you are a warm body. You aren’t getting the private equity jobs, but based on the OP, it doesn’t seem like that’s what the kid is cut out for anyway

Plenty of insurance jobs to be had in the area. It’s finance adjacent and plenty of room to grow and there’s a ton of financial upside.

Is he open to relocating out of state to work in an entry level role in Big Tech? If so can you have him email me his resume at euphemus at outlook dot com?

This isn't 2000. I could move all my shite a 12 hour drive away and be moved into a new apartment in 3 days. However, with everyone else, companies, especially with AI scanning every CV that comes across the desk, don't want to put up with the typical shite that relocators cause. Oh, I need more time to break my lease, can I have money for a u-Haul, my aunt is sick and I can't move for another month, etc. Your shite is hitting the recycle bin PDQ, because they don't have to deal with the added complexity, especially at the entry level.

Bruh, ain’t nothing out there but the school.

My friend lives there because he teaches at Nichols.

Your nephew needs to go to one of the more populated areas and get a roommate. Or leave the state.

Easy solution. Move. He’s in the wrong area and can easily fix this. He has nothing weighing him down.
