HR is usually one of the biggest wastes of money in an organization. I believe this Astronomer scandal is going to force some change.
HR loves to persecute others for exactly what the Astronomer CEO and HR employee got caught doing….and the action is swift and severe.
It is time that HR was managed by the engineers, accountants and other professionals.
The entire HR industry is a sham / a joke and one lady, that thought she was better than everyone else may bring real reform to a pathetic industry.

I mean other than cutting some dead weight, not really.

This is completely idiotic, why would you waste people with those skills (and pay grade) on hr tasks that could be handled by a much lower level employee?

The two most worthless departments in corporate America are HR and Marketing which is why during a reduction in force they are always the first departments to have people laid off in.

I agree but big corporations will never reduce their influence in any meaningful way.
Simple too much risk from a lawsuit standpoint
I manage a sales team for a fortune 100 company and I have to remind my reps from time to time that HR is not their friend nor do they care about their well being over the financial risk to the company.
HR ultimate goal is to lower a corporations risk exposure during conflict resolution.

HR is an excuse for corporations to fill their DEI quotas.

Nothing will happen.
HR exists to protect “the company” against lawsuits and legal issues. This means peons like you and I are a liability to them.
The CEO and the CHR and on a different level.

HR also does all of the hiring and recruiting for a company. It’s not just slapping people’s wrists.

True. Selling product is such a scam.

It sure is hard to pay Workday to publicize your positions on LinkedIn and Glassdoor, and to shite can 99% of resumes before you ever read them.

My wife is a VP of HR and she brings good value to where she works. Right off the bat she changed their payroll company and hr support and saved the company around 500k a year. She has done a ton of M&A work with different companies over the years and that seems to be a lot of the stuff she works on still. Her company is in growth mode and they have gone from 60 employees to around 400 in 2 years.
She’s working on building out her HR team at the moment to help with the fast growth of the company and constantly exapnding into new states. All these different states have different laws so I wouldn’t want some ops manager or director handling that kind of stuff.

Astronomer isn’t a “scandal”…it’s two leaders caught in an affair. It will get handled accordingly but this will involve the board.
HR might as well be an extension of the Legal department more than anything else.

It's like any other department in that each one is a reflection of executive management. For every one of these...
...they are dealing with a few dozen legitimate claims ranging from theft to showing up for work drunk to investigating customer complaints to fighting off lawsuits by terminated employees, etc. How well they do this is as much a gamble as is the quality of service you get from your first visit to any random restaurant.
Would it make life easier in a lot of places if you could tell dick and fart jokes openly and freely once again without fear of being hauled down to HR because some uninvolved 3rd party got their fee-fees hurt? Absolutely.
Would it be more costly to run a business without some legal cover provided by HR for justified firings? Also, absolutely.

I sure wish my company would let accounting take over payroll. It would make my eom life much easier to have it done correctly for a change.

An engineer trying to handle a sexual harassment case would be an Always Sunny episode.

We only have two HR people at my company (close to 200 employees). They do a lot of work with onboarding, typical HR professionalism related issues.
Where I think they are most valuable is that they work with vendors and our executives to try to make sure we are getting the best benefits at the best expense for the company. I think they are worth their pay.

While I hear you and your sentiment, you might be surprised by the hidden value that a professional HR system can create (most of which comes from value destruction minimization). There are other examples.
The number of employee relations / industrial relations risks and grievances would destroy many small to medium-sized companies if not for HR / policy / holding mirror to face of company leaders. Questioned it often across many years of my career. Saw value with own eyes just the same.
To say engineers are better at human performance matters is like saying machines and humans are the same.
Not a fang to engineers, but human nature and behaviors are not necessarily their strong suit.

HR does a lot more than you think…. Benefits. Payroll, timekeeping, etc…. A lot goes into all that in the back end, rest assures

More and more of that is handled by AI, 3rd party recruiters and the hiring manager.
