re: How far would you commute to double your salary?

We just moved into what we thought would be our forever home at the beginning of the year. Going through another house buying process with continued rising interest rates is nauseating to think about.
My wife and I made a decision on the type of life we want to live. We are thankful for what we make and live a comfortable, humble life within our means. When it comes down to it in that situation we are intentionally choosing to pass on the money to stay on the course we chose, however we both have tight-knit families in town, so moving is a no-go. If we had no family near us, then that's an easy decision: move, because that amount of money would allow my wife to quit working. There's no way I'm missing those few precious hours I get with my kids at the beginning and end of each weekday.
All that said, the housing market in Houma / Thibodaux is outrageous still.

Have you given thought to renting a studio apartment or extra bedroom to sleep in Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday? If you commute only Monday morning and Friday evening that's more doable.

No way I would make that commute. In less than 6 months, you'll be burned out and regretting your decision.
Consider a condo in the job location to stay in Monday thru Thursday nights, but FAMILY TIME and HOME LIFE should take priority.
The extra money can be life changing, but I worry about the impact it has on your kids and your wife.
And think of all your kid's sporting events you'll have to miss because you are not able to get home in time, not to mention the damage it may make to your marriage.
Extra money is nice, but do everything you can to enhance your marriage and the time spent with your kids; it cannot be reclaimed and they grow up so fast.

I would increase it 10x for sure.

I would move.
15+ hours a week in the car?
Not for me.

at a 3 hour 40 minute roundtrip 5 days a week. Ideally be home by 7-7:30pm every night, so wouldn't be able to spend much time with my kids until the weekend. Just curious how others would respond to this scenario.
Thats nothing unless you arent including traffic. because those days could add another hour or so on.
And are your kids going to bed at 7 every night where you wont be able to see them?

A 200 mile per day commute is “nothing”?
Ok hardass.

That's disgusting and you'll be burnt out of that real quick. The money obviously is a big motivating factor but the only way that will work long term is moving (a lot) closer to this job. There's no way you're making a 4 hour 5 day commute work out for any real length of time.
Maybe you last a month, 3 months, 6 months even a year...but you will get burned out on that and I bet home life quality will take a nosedive as well

I spend a lot of time in my car and did 200 miles yesterday like it was nothing. Did 480 miles Monday and that’s a long day. With that being said there’s no way I would sign up for that shite daily.

Get an apartment or negotiate with an extended stay hotel nearby your work and shave some time off during the week by spending two nights or so per week near your work.

HELL to the NO I wouldn’t take the new job. I’d ask for a raise and stay closer to my family. Put your kids first.

My immediate reaction....
If you possess a skill which is in demand to the extent you can double your current salary just 2 hours away, then you can increase your salary in your current location. If the job is some kind of an anomaly, you don't want it anyway.

Buy an old RV and park it behind their office.

Sometimes there’s an offer you can’t pass up.

But the thread isn’t about doing 200 miles in a day. It’s about doing 200 miles in a day, everyday. With 100 of them on the way to a demanding job and 100 of them leaving a demanding job.

Pretty sure I agree with you when I said there’s no way I would sign up for that daily. I drive a Tesla so I’m always checking my mileage

Usually companies paying $280k salary position type jobs are willing to pay for relocation I would think. I drive 45 minutes to work a day and that is enough for me. If I was you I would find a happy medium between the place you live now and the job and get my drive time down to 35-40 minutes and the kids will have to adjust to a new school. If they are starting you at 280k I can’t even imagine what kind of salary you would end up with. I would figure out a way to make it work. If you are smart with money and stay living the same lifestyle you live now you should be able to save a lot of money and invest it knocking years off retirement. I would make it work

Too much travel
Might as well say you are taking a job where u are out of town Monday - Friday
You will miss all your kids events (2 year old will be asleep by the time you get home) traffic days will make it worse. Came season and came trucks on the highway will add to that commute.
Wife will be pissed she does everything and you are never there which will put a strain on the marriage.
And you will blink and the 12 yo is moving out. Trust me. Don’t miss the opportunity. U only have a few more years and it all changes.

My current commute is about 15 minutes and I make 35k a year (don’t laugh I know I’m poor)
If I was making 70k a year I would probably drive an hour each way or or maybe even an hour 15.
