I still like Shores, LSU needs for him to improve so sticking with it is better for this team long term imo He just gets a quicker hook now imo, especially if Cowan is available.

2 innings quick hook is NOT a starting pitcher. Pitching 2 innings is for a reliever. Cowan should be the starter.

If Cowan starts you probably only need 1-3 innings of relief for that day, if Shores starts you will need at least 4-5 innings of relief, no brainer, you start Cowan and really save your bullpen, Shoes can work it out in the pen

If Cowan hasn’t pitched yet by sunday then he should start.

Shores can get better in the pen.

This would be a good move with the emergence of Rizy and Cooper Williams lately. Those two freshman should be able to give quality outs out of the pen while moving Cowan and getting another elite starter in Saturday.

I believe Cowan is the better pitcher- right now.
I don't think it's close.

The fear is, if you start cowan, can you count on your bullpen to win the Friday night game.

I also, think Evans is a better pitcher than Shores right now, but its the same question. If you remove them from your bullpen, I am not sure you get more wins..

I’m not mad at this idea

I do think that we could be overvaluing Cowan as a starter at this level. I think he’s such a change of pace when he usually follows one of our power arms that it takes hitters a good couple ABs to adjust and that’s worked to his benefit.

If he has to start, can he get through the order 3+ times? And if not, who’s there to finish the game Sunday?

We should be able to hit most Sundays. That usually should allow Jay the benefit of picking his time to pull Shores. The problem in some of Shores starts is that we haven’t hit. TX, OU, Auburn weren’t games we lost (or got close to losing) because of Shores, the bats didn’t show up.

My insignificant opinion:

With Shores coming back from injury, he needs longer to prepare to come in to pitch. If he gives you 5 innings with 3-4 runs you are still in it in the SEC. Cowan starting on Sunday would definitely give you a big opportunity to win, HOWEVER Shores would not be as effective as Cowan in relief. Keep them in the same spots and leave Cowan able to spot or long relief as needed. Your staff is stronger with Cowan and Evans relieving

There was no reason to change things while we were on pace for a national seed. Might as well continue letting Shores get as much work as possible before the postseason. The sweep changes things and I think we may see Cowan start this weekend

Shores needs starts and innings to continue to develop. LSU is not losing games because Cowan isn't starting and he is. Switching it up would be an optic thing.

Yep. Shores will continue to start as he should. Him developing is more important with the hay we have in the barn

Sure. You use Evans. If the game is close, you use Evans on Friday and hope the bullpen holds up on Fr/Sa.

You don't want to lose a one run game on Friday because you're saving your closer and then not need him the rest of the weekend because of blowouts.

We may have to use Evans multiple times on the weekend in short stints. In fact, we should use him multiple times on some weekends because it's almost guaranteed we'll use him that way in the post season.

I think our pen is improving and no longer a hot mess - that is important, given Guidry's status. We don't need to bring Evens out in the 6th inning to give us 3.2 innings. We've got 3-4 guys we can use for long relief and another 3-4 guys for an hour or two.

In 3 of 5 SEC series we have scored 2,3,& 2 on Sundays (or the final game of the series) and we have lost two of those games. Coincidentally it was also against Texas, Oklahoma, and Auburn. The 3 best teams we have played.

If the offense is going to continue putting up less than 7 runs on Sunday and treat Sunday like they are going up against a Friday night Ace then maybe it’s time to give Cowan a shot at starting on Sundays.

I dunno what the rest of the schedule looks like in terms of Sunday starters we will be going up against, but if they show they have somewhat of a pulse then it would be dangerous to keep the rotation as it is. Especially with some of the offenses we will be facing.

If Ware just stopped walking guys just a little this pen would get so much better. I know you could say that about alot of pitchers but Ware is a projected 2nd round pick. He's got so much potential if he could just get the ball over the plate. I guess the same could be said about Mayers too.

Cowan

I think you plan to use in a high leverage situation, but if not (or he throws few pitches) start him Sunday

No pressure then

You can see him crumble when things aren't going his way

I think Cowan may be the most dependable arm on the team… you know what kind of outing you will get from him everytime.

If you pair Anderson/cowan on Friday and Eyanson/Evans on Saturday. You will win the vast majority of your Friday and Saturday games .

I think if you start Cowan on Sunday, there will come several Friday/Saturday games that your starter exits the game with a lead and you end up losing. The bullpen outside of Cowan and Evan’s is just giving up too many free passes.

If Shores can't get the job done, find another Sunday starter. You don't sacrifice your lights out closer to upgrade your #3 starter. I remember when the Marlins selected Bryan Harvey and his $4 million contract in the 1993 expansion draft. The move didn't seem to make sense. He was their highest paid player and only All Star. The justification was, the Marlins weren't going to win a lot of fames but they were going to make damn sure that they won the games where they had a late lead. They went 64-98 but Harvey saved 45 of those wins. Ironically, the Marlins had another reliver on that team - Trevor Hoffman who retired as the all time MLB saves leader.

As long as LSU is in good shape competing for a top 8 seed he’ll probably continue with Shores with the hope the work will have him sharp come mid-May or so. If not, I think you probably see Cowan start in a must win game in the postseason.
