Suppose he were a 100% Swedish national, no American parent, and attended LSU. Would you root for him any more or less?

Because he doesn't have the chest to compete for the Red, White and Blue

This is such a copout. What kind of athlete is afraid of competition when the alternative is NOT representing the country in which you were born and raised because it’s easier?

This is a foolish statement.

It's not being scared of competition. It's the fact that US track and field refuses to stop handicapping our athletes by using a moronic qualifying system. As others have said, pole vault is incredibly technical and very dependent on a ton of conditions. One meet shouldn't be the way we determine who to send to represent the US.

Think of it this way: would you think it's a good idea for LSU to recruit players based on a one day recruiting workshop or by examining their entire body of work?

It even goes beyond that. When he started competing in world competition for Sweden, if my memory serves me, he was too young by a couple of years to compete under the US rules. I believe that played a big part in his initial decision. If my memory is wrong, please correct me, it happens a lot in my old age.

I think gratitude is part of why he continues plus the fact that your whole seasons resume pretty much goes out of the window when the decision is left to a single meet's results.

This is the main reason imo. If he has one bad day at qualifying, he misses the Olympics as an American. As a swede he's assured of going.

So its about Mondo not America. And you are saying he doesnt have the chest.

Man, forget it. Kids these days don't give a shite about the USA. They think their freedom is a birthright and no one can take it away from them.

You are greatly overestimating the risk of a world-class athlete missing out on the Olympics and Worlds because of US Nationals.

If there's any risk at all, why not mitigate it as much as possible?

If his life's goal is to win the Olympics - thereby proving he's the best in the world (at least for one meet) - why should he be criticized for giving himself the best chance? If you don't like it, blame the rules, not competitors who read them.

It’s a very low risk. The fact that Mondo competes for Sweden certainly doesn’t keep me up at night.

At this point, Mondo hasn’t finished outside of the top 8 in a global competition in quite a long time, not to mention in a contest with just Americans. The US has a very strong group of pole vaulters but the same 5-6 people are in the global finals at every event. This isn't like skiing with huge variability.

It’s also about training and money. I am pretty sure Sweden covers all of his training and travel costs. I think they also pay for his coach as well. I do not think USTAF does any of this

...yet all the other American athletes seem to manage without taking an easier way out.

And again, HUGE Mondo fan here. The first time I heard about him early on, the recognition was instant because I was friends with his uncle in middle school and knew of Mondo’s dad’s exploits in high school and beyond. So from the first time I heard about Mondo, I’ve followed his accomplishments, told my kids about him, etc. Big fan, and I’m not trashing him - I’ll just be cheering a little harder for those who made the apparent sacrifices to make the American team. I’ll be happy for Mondo and his family if he wins gold - I’d just be a little happier if he was doing it for his actual home country.

Yeah, but then again, you have to make the team.

This is no different than any sport.

Thousands of Louisiana kids don't play sports at LSU every year because they got the chance somewhere else.

No shame in that.

This is exactly what happened at the NCAA finals this year. The US olympic committee ought to figure out how to put in a high standard for each sport and if an athlete would meet that standard then they would automatically be on the team
