And the qualifying isn’t nearly as dumb as it is for the USA.

This is the main reason imo. If he has one bad day at qualifying, he misses the Olympics as an American. As a swede he's assured of going.

This is correct.

With Sweden, he's guaranteed a shot at the Olympic team.
With Team USA, you have to qualify at Olympic trials which means if you go there and have one bad meet you may not make the Olympic team. Not to mention, who knows what the weather could be like at the trials to begin with with wind and issues that affect pole vaulters.
It's stupid that USA does it that way and in the past has disqualified really good athletes. Remember when Dan O Brien, one of the top decathletes in the world, failed to qualify one year because he did not complete his pole vault and he likely would have won gold as he was tops in the world but he stayed home.

This is such a copout. What kind of athlete is afraid of competition when the alternative is NOT representing the country in which you were born and raised because it’s easier?

ETA: I’m a huge Mondo fan and went to high school with his dad and uncle, but I’ll never understand someone passing on the chamce the represent the USA because the alternative is “easier”.

Some people gt upset about this, but honestly, the Kid is from Lafayette.

If he wins a gold, it wouldn't be because Sweden is better than the US. I'm counting it for the US.

Like you or anyone else in here has any clue what it's like to make that kind of decision.

I don’t have to be an elite athlete to know that my loyalty lies with the United Staes and that it would be the ultimate honor to represent MY country in which I was born and raised.

How do you know whether or not and to what extent he is or is not proud of his Swedish heritage? Did it occur to you that that might also be a factor that makes it a little bit easier for him to consider competing for Sweden instead of the United States?

It's not being scared of competition. It's the fact that US track and field refuses to stop handicapping our athletes by using a moronic qualifying system. As others have said, pole vault is incredibly technical and very dependent on a ton of conditions. One meet shouldn't be the way we determine who to send to represent the US.

Think of it this way: would you think it's a good idea for LSU to recruit players based on a one day recruiting workshop or by examining their entire body of work?

When you are wearing the Swedish colors and the Swedish national anthem will be played if you win, I am not pulling for you if you compete against a US competitor wearing US colors.

In fact if anyone other than your family or close friends are pulling for you against a US competitor, that is not very patriotic!

Truth

I’ll pull for the Swede to finish right behind the Americans.

If it’s stronger than his pride for his American heritage, like I said, I’ll pull for him to finish right behind the Americans.

It’s also about training and money. I am pretty sure Sweden covers all of his training and travel costs. I think they also pay for his coach as well. I do not think USTAF does any of this.
