Why does Magellan get all the credit instead of Elcano?

Magellan got his arse killed in the Philippines. Elcano took over and through sheer force of will, a refusal to die, got them home. The first man to complete such a heroic feat.

Yet all we mention now is Magellan. Streets are named after him. Products, software etc bear his name. Mention Elcano and people say "who"?

How come Magellan instead of Elcano?

Everyone knows the Wright bros. Few know Curtiss.

Everyone knows Henry Ford, few know Ransom Olds.

The idea is often bigger than the procedure.

Magellan was the one who organized the trip and who convinced King Charles fund it.

Elcano sounds like a Mexican grocery.

Magellan is majestic sounding.

I’m also pretty sure Magellan came from some minor nobility and Elcano was further removed from a noble line (was more in line with the maritime class), so that likely also came into play.

I believe only 18 total completed the circumnavigation.

Magellan also deserves credit, in my opinion, for successfully putting down a serious mutiny threat prior to rounding Cape Horn.

They deserve a lot of credit as well. Gotta have big balls to sign up for that crew.

Absolutely, but I don’t think they really understood what they were signing up for. They greatly underestimated the size of the Pacific based on what I’ve read. I’m not sure he could have assembled a crew had he told them that they would be three years at sea.

Magellan is better priced and fits better. Not all of us can afford Elcano.
