he was in so much pain that he rarely came out of his office for practices
So, he recruited poorly, failed to perform his primary non-gameday responsibility of coaching, AND was not a very good game manager because of the first 2 failures.

When CPM retired he recognized his father's contribution to his career but his reason for retiring then was all about his two neck surgeries and how it impacted his coaching and interactions with the players:

“I just haven’t been able to do that as much the last couple of years. Consequently, I just don’t feel like I’ve been the same coach. I just don’t feel like I’ve been carrying my weight.”

He was not bad at all but Jay seems to be on another level.
Jay is in the prime of his career trying to be someone. CPM was a great coach, but he was in the coasting part of his career. Also, LSU is a popular destination and it gives LSU coaches an advantage. That advantage is even bigger now that coaches can fix recruiting mistakes through the portal.

Had a poor stretch of recruiting
I think Mainieri's 2019 class had Jacob Hasty and Rye Gunter. And I'm pretty sure that was it for pitching
Though to be fair i think 2018 was Marceaux, Cole Henry, Jaden Hill, and Storz which was a great haul at the time. I could be getting some years mixed up though

Based on what?
Mainieri's first 4 years at LSU have been slightly better than Jay's have been and Mainieri took over a much worse situation than Jay did.
That's not even me shitting on Jay because I'm not, but people shortchange Mainieri's run from 2008-2017 way too much on here.

but not a Skip

who the hell is?
Tim Corbin was going on a pretty good run there for a while.
Took a bottom feeder program and turned it into a national powerhouse, made it to Omaha 5x in a 10 year span.
Probably the closest one to Skip in the modern era.

Storz was in the class before the other 3.
2018 had Beloso & Dugas but every other hitter in the class transferred.

Mainieri would throw players under the bus after a loss. Rubbed me the wrong way.
It was nothing compared to what Skip did to players.

but don’t think he deserves a spot in LSU infamy.
This is just a terrible take.

His dad died and he had health problems at the time. I adored him for what he gave for LSU baseball but it was time. And I guess all he needed was a couple years off and he's of course back at South Carolina. I'm very happy for him.
All of this.

He undeniably had a rash of bad luck with his best pitchers going down to injury, whether that had anything to do with he/Dunn’s management or not.
I also agree with others that he was generally recruiting a smaller athlete with an emphasis on defense, likely shaped from the BBCOR bat era.
Usually, an incomplete pitching staff paired with a lack of slugging will limit a team especially in this league. He was lucky 2020 was cancelled due to Covid because he would have probably been removed after that season the way that team looked at the start.

Overall drop in talent. I guess his decline in health contributed to that.
Some other factors that accelerated it:
- Eric Walker injury. This not only hurt us in Omaha but also in '18. We had to replace all three starters after '17 which forced a good closer (Hess) to become a starter.
- Josh Smith injury. Missed almost all of '18. With Walker and Josh the '18 team could've made it to a super.
- Covid shortened season. The '20 roster wasn't strong but the season would've given some key players experience for '21.
All that said, we hosted a super in '19 and made it to a SR in '21.

How so?
Mainieri in his first four years made it to Omaha twice.

Probably bought Mainieri an extra season. That team wasn’t going anywhere

Sully has been to 9 CWS since 2010 with a national title and two runner-up finishes.
Pat Casey won 3 national titles in 2006, 2007, and 2018 with 6 total trips to Omaha

CPM slipped all but one year at LSU.

We hosted a Super in '19. Regardless of what happened in '20, I don't think he would've been "fired."
OTOH, baseball is an odd sport. The '20 team had enough arms (Henry, Marceaux, Labas, Hill, Fontenot), would've been solid in the field, but would struggle to score runs. I think we make the field and the team that plays in February is not the team that plays in May.

He recruited small ball good defense over good hitting. IMO

CPM got lazy for the second time here. He first did it after his natty. Then had a good run but couldn’t finish. Then he stopped recruiting

Excuse.
Coach Bertman coached several years needing hip replacements... both hips, but he won national championships through it. Hell, the trainer was the MVP for the 1991 National Championship team as he kept Skip going the whole year.
Maneri coasted after winning it all.
