I had to look it up because I knew it had to have been a long time.

1943 LINK

They were the first SEC school we ever played (if you count teams still in the conference) - well, shite, on second glance this is nit correct. We played Ole Miss and Bama before we ever played them. I don’t know why I thought they were first after Tulane.

and the school we’ve played the most number of times. - - This is still correct, though.

Yet nobody really considers them a “rival” or thinks much of them not being a ‘24 matchup.

It’s just sort of a funny thing to me.

I read somewhere that this will be only the 4th year in which LSU and MSU have both fielded a team and not played each other.

Same. It’s always an early season trap game where we seem to still be working out the kinks.

In my lifetime, until recent years, Moo State was always a guaranteed win.

2017. I know LSU fielded a team in Davis-Wade Stadium that night, but whatever they played was not football. Thanks Coach Oeaux

This is one of those perceptions that trumps reality things.

LSU leads the overall series 77-36-2. Miss State has beaten LSU 3 times this century and 6 times since 1985. 38 wins vs 6 losses in that time frame from 1985-2022. 9 of those 36 wins were by 10 points or less. During the same period, we had 15 wins by 20 or more, 7 of those by 30 or more, and 4 of them by 40 or more.

A bug and a windshield are not rivals.

I don't think they are considered as much of rival because they are 1. not in our state, so no geographic rivalry 2. haven't been very good for the past 30 years, so no competitive rivalry. 3. no one is going to miss the fricking cow bells.

How many "game of the centuries" have we played with Alabama? How back and forth has the competition with Florida been? The stakes are higher with those teams, so the rivalry feels deeper. And for me, I consider Ole Piss more of a rival than Moo State.

I love going to away games. This is one that I don’t mind seeing off of our schedule. Not a single thing to do in that area and also frick those cowbells. Games are almost always during the day when we play there as well.

What? That university/main st has bars and restaurants. More near their stadium than dumpy Baton Rouge.

part of what makes CFB so great is heated/hated rivalries. I love the Auburn game. Its been soooo good over the years. Sucks we wont play them

Historically, they were actually a very rare matchup with us. It wasn’t until they went to the east-west divisional split that we started playing them yearly.

One of my favorite weird LSU trivia things is in 1967 Miss State only scored 49 points for the whole season. In the Miss State - LSU game that year , beat them 55-0. More points in one game than those poor jokers scored the entire season.

But we've played Miss State more. So technically they *should* be more of a rival. But they just aren't. It isn't that Ole Miss is a better team. We just hate them more. Just is.

OP is lamenting the loss of Miss State. But it just isn't as strong of a rivalry.
