8 is too many. There just are rarely 8 championship caliber teams in any given college football season. I almost always hate playoff expansions

With how big CFB is and the disparity in strengths of schedules, one loss should never eliminate a team from the chance to play for a Natty.

12 teams will probably be perfect although I would rather no teams have a bye. 8 wouldn’t include all one loss teams, so I guess go with 16 and if a team or two with two losses sprinkles in, then so be it.

8.

Why should any team in a regional sport get a bye? The regular seasons are NOT equal. There is no reason a one loss PAC 12 team should get a bye over a 3 loss SEC team..or just as bad, an undefeated Cincinnati (2022).

Until we go to one super conference of 48 where you play teams from all over the country (isn't ever gonna happen), it is absurd for any team to get a bye.

8. or 4 or 2 or 16. I don't care as long as nobody gets a bye.

8 is perfect. Maybe 10 at the absolute max. More than that and it's far too diluted.

4. After the top 2-3 most years there is a significant drop off.

The conference championships can be the first round of playoffs with the 4 strongest conferences represented in the playoffs.

6, The power 5 champs and 1 at large. 2 buys, NFL type bracket from a couple years back. If you go to 8 there will be roughly 10 teams with the same record as the 8th seed almost every year and there will be no validity to the 7th and 8th seeds. There are too many teams in college, there has to be defined qualifiers for an extended playoff.

Guaranteed spots for conference champions is a terrible idea that is a talking point of the weaker conferences. Why are we going to guarantee a spot from any conference? Put the best teams in. I don’t care if every single one is from the same conference.

I always thought 6 was the most intriguing to me. All 5 power 5 champs, plus an at large elected by the playoff committee. Allows for a group of 5 team if they are "good" one year, otherwise, a deserving conference runner up or otherwise highly ranked non conference champ. The kicker would be first round bye, earned by final rankings. Still keeps high value on being almost perfect in the regular season, but keeps all power 5 conferences relevant and allows a wild card.

4 is the only that makes sense. Every year 1 or 2 teams get blown out and didn’t belong on the field with the other. Realistically 2 or 3 teams are legit NC squads everyone else is a notch below

Agreed. Sure, there will be bitching by #9 (and 10 and 11) but that's more acceptable than bitching by #3 or #5. And 3 rounds is plenty if we're going to keep the 12 game regular season plus conference championships. Alternatively, you could go to 6 with #1 and #2 getting a first round bye, but if you're going to 3 rounds anyway, why not pick up 2 more teams.

131, just like we had before the BCS or the joke known as the College Football Playoffs.

Either 6 or 8 but I don't like the idea of automatic bids for conference champs. #25 UConn got to the Fiesta Bowl in 2010 because of winning the Big East with an 8-4 record. They couldn't sell their alloted tickets and got blown out by Oklahoma.
