Nick Saban

good point on TAF too, money raised by them and the General who took over and brought it up to where it is today, also top people in AD-others said bertman, which is true, but also Verge, Herb and others, lots of top people who worked hard in their areas..Jeff Boss, Video guy who wins awards, strength coach etc...all behind the scenes people who are first class IMO..and yes Dinardo was a big part to start as was Faulk who was JD's first big recruit....

lsu was a magic place before we made some crappy football hires. but times changed and we were using an outdated "model" with aging facilities and being very cheap with coaches salaries. boom. TAF, getting lucky with saban and then paying him after the nc woke us up. tiger fans will support a top program. so i would have to say the #1 thing that helped LSU was the TAF and Tiger fans willingness to put their money up for a successful football team.

Dinardo started bringing back the big time recruits top that off with better coaching and more $ and you have a winning combo.

Gerry Dinardo. His focus on recruiting in Louisiana and stockpiling talent enabled a coach better prepared to handle a major program to excel early-Saban. With both the Alabama situation and LSU Saban walked into a roster that had loads of talent. 99% chance Saban would have rebuilt LSU anyways but "the process" would have taken longer.

Updating some things help, but actuall wimming will bring in the money and the national exposure to recruits. Once we started winning, more money was being made and more money for the athletic program to continue to update facilities. Money alone didnt win those games.

I agree with this, and those giving Dinardo a lot of credit. The answer is far more complicated than just Nick Saban.

The state of LA always had elite talent. It just didn't stay instate. Dinardo started putting up a fence, Saban finished building it and Miles reinforced it. Simple.

I know some will say coaching, but I'm going with the money factor. Seems like the more money you throw at something, the better it gets over time.
This, but more fundamentally, it is the only big school in a football state. That helps in two ways.
The Louisiana talent is not split amongst two big powers. Obviously some will still get out, but no more than would have left anyway.
Secondly, it brings a bigger fanbase. LSU has very big fans who throw money at the program in all parts of the state.

I started graduate school at LSU in 2000, so that could have played a role. It's merely a coincidence some guy named Saban started at LSU the same year.

Joe Dean was a cheap and awful AD. In case you people don't know it, our football team was not what it should have been. If it wouldn't have been for Mark Emmerit(sp) luring Saban to LSU, we probably would still have a mediocre program.

then Saban damn sure won the 2001 SEC title with Gerry D's players.
Pretty sure that's what he meant and good point!

In-state talent.
If we get the majority of the elite talent in this state, LSU will always be an elite team.

In no particular order: willingness to invest major $$$ in attracting top coaches (head & assistants) & facilities, creating top academic center for athletes, keeping nearly all top players in state, TAF.

Chancellor Mark E. And Gerry dinardo. Gerry stopped the bleeding and Nick came in and built off of what Dinardo stopped. Gerry brought in some big time recruits as well.
This. Dinardo doesn't get enough credit. He started us back and Mark E. hired a great coach (saban).
Recruits then decided LSU was as good as anyone and stayed home to play for the "Tigers". Les has continued that trend. Lets hope no one comes along to sink the ship.

We all know the answer but may not want to admit it - especially after 1/9/12: Nick Saban. The guy is simply a master at building a great college football program. He led the administration in the right direction and they followed. As much as I hate the little leprechan for jumping ship and then going to 'Bama of all places he's The Man. Guess he could have built a power at Ole Miss. That would be the only thing worse..... Geaux Tigers!

Board of Sups getting out of the way (some how)

IMO it was two things:
1. A sense of urgency was instilled into the program when OFHC was hired.
2. Tommy Moffitt. LSU had been a talented team for a few years before Saban. Almost every loss prior to Moffitt's hire was due to running out of gas in the 4th quarter. Moffitt changed that year 1.
