Notre Dame dispells that notion. Saban was the spark that ignited it all. Miles has done an excellent job keeping the fire going.

And the '01 recruiting class. Without these two, there's no telling where we would have ended up...

The correct answer is coaches (plural). The head coach has to have good coordinators who have to have good position coaches. Even the strenght and conditioning coach factors in.

Saban had great coordinators. Jimbo and Muschamp are now HC at football powers. He had great coaches the last three years.

Look what happened to Miles when we lost Pellini. Yes, Perilloux was a factor, but he didn't play defense. There was immediate improvement to the team as a whole when Chavis came in.

Remember our boy DeNardo. He was an above average head coach. Look what happened when he lost his DC and brought in Tupper. Then he lost is OC, hired from within, and lost his job.

We started keeping the Louisiana talent in Louisiana.

Started with Dinardo improving the facilities and Saban taking it to another level.

Dinardo started locking down in state recruits.

Saban came in and continued the recruiting along with getting improved facilities.

Now the kids being recruited only know LSU as a powerhouse...which helps recruiting even more.

Mark Emmert/Saban/Owning LA all were equal factors.
If there was a gun to my head, I'd say the push goes to Emmert

It's a combination of several things:

1.) 4.5 million people in LA and LSU is the only big fish. Folks in LA want a winner so LSU gets plenty of attention state-wide.

2.) We're able to sign 15 of the Top 20 LA recruits each year. That's enough talent to get us to a descent bowl game.

3.) We're able to sign 5 out-of-state kids each year at positions of need.

4.) The money! Gives us the ability to have top of the line facilities and coaches.

5.) Coaching. See #4. We can afford to pay our Head Coach $3.751 mill per season, and asst get great salaries too.

The SWC dissolving was a boon for East Texas recruiting, just needed a coach to take advantage. This is part of it I think.

I see the money as much less of a factor than some others. Many schools have plenty of money - many have MUCH more than we do - yet they struggle. the ratio of talent base to recruiting pressure is what made it happen so quickly. No question you have to have the coaching, but you can't make chicken salad out of chicken, uh, feathers.

Keeping instate talent and poaching choice talent from East Texas and the Gulf region. LA is rich with NFL talent. Being the only major sports school in the state helps a lot. Just think if Ole Miss or Miss St were the only big time program in that state they'd be pretty solid considering all the talent that comes from the state.

Chancellor Mark E. And Gerry dinardo. Gerry stopped the bleeding and Nick came in and built off of what Dinardo stopped. Gerry brought in some big time recruits as well.

#1, far and away, even above the coaching (and I am not shy about giving Saban credit for reviving and building our current program), it was that La. produces some of the very best football players per capita in the entire nation, with almost no recruiting pressure from within the state. When Saban arrived, the program was in disarray, but the cupboard was FAR from bare. Hell, we had three QB's on the team who would spend some rather significant time cashing NFL checks. I'd have taken any of them last year! Not to mention some stellar LB's, DB's, a Belitnikoff winner. You get the idea. The talent was largely there when Saban arrived and he knew what to do with it. Put it this way: LSU won the SEC in 2001, Saban's 2nd year. Miles won the SEC and NC in 2007, his third year. If Miles won 2007 titles with Saban's players, then Saban damn sure won the 2001 SEC title with Saban's players.

Basically, LSU has (relatively) easily tapped reserves of talent and should always be good if the program is well managed. Therefore, when Saban arrived, the results came quickly, and Miles kept it going.

This. One thing that Saban realized and that Miles continued...lock up Louisiana talent and pick off a few good ones outside...you have the makings of a SERIOUS team

As poorly as his era ended he had some awesome talent when you look at the players that made it to the NFL. The Peach Bowl and 2001 SEC Championship had a lot of Dinardo talent.

I think we were always on the verge. We were like Clemson is now. All we had to do was get it together and keep the best talent in-state.
