Greg Penn will not turn a corner because there is no corner for him to turn. The guy was a stud last year, even though most fans have no idea.

Major is playing a new role that I think probably suits him better.
Literally every video released from fall practice makes me disagree with this.
Just watch the 1 on 1s. He's just awful dude. He really is. No more excuses for him. Time to move on.

Major Burns led the team in tackles last year my guy.
And? He probably led the team in missed tackles too. One of the worst seasons for a DB I can remember. We literally had nothing to replace him so they had no choice but to play him.

No telling how much a more aggressive simpler scheme could help these guys
I was listening to Hester, Matt Flynn, and T-Bob yesterday morning and they were laughing at how predictable the 3rd down defense was. They said it was all undisguised cover 4 in any obvious passing down with little to no blitzing.

There’s a role for Penn. if he starts I suspect it’s against a team that likes to run it between the tackles.
If Ryan starts at CB, it means we don’t have 2 CBs. I’d expect disaster level performance outbid the CBs.
Major Burns is going to start.

Greg penn is good and very experienced.
Ryan and burns have had moments. Ryan has the talent but feel like hes always in the wrong position. Interested to see how they use him.

We can't factually say that, but for the sake of conversation, i'll diagree.
Major will be a better player for us this year, then he was last year. And by the numbers, if so, he will have a good year (90 tackles last year is a lot of tackles from the S position). We all watch the same post practice clips..we've seen him bad in coverage once, and making interceptions and what not in others. I don't think Major will be the squeaky wheel of the defense this year.

Not judging anyone in a Matt House defense. Clean slate.
A lot of truth to these comments. I feel similarly. I think Penn is ok and Sage is capable but seems best on the outside, rather than the slot, even though I would not have thought that would be the case. I don't know what Burns' issues were as he was good enough for Georgia to take him out of HS. I'm hoping his problems will be fixed now that House is gone.

Just a reminder that people thought Damone Clark sucked
I don't expect these guys to have that drastic of a turn around but coaching and experience really does matter
Clark was very good under Aranda. Then Bozo Orgeron decided he was going to play his 1990's Miami fan fiction defense. That made Clark look awful. He remained awful until the 2021 Alabama game when Orgeron let coaches who actually knew what they were doing fully run the defense. To no one's surprise, Clark looked like an All American for the remainder of the season.
Ryan, on the other hand, has never had a point in his LSU career where he looked good. He struggled in 2021. He wasn't good in 2022 on a defense that was actually pretty good. He wasn't good last year. What reason is there to believe this year will be different? In 3 years of significant PT he only has two notable plays. A strip fumble (that was overturned due to a bad rule) and a 4th down PBU vs. Florida last year that was really the result of a poor throw (Ryan was beaten on the route).
It's nothing personal, but the guy is just a "tweener". He's not quick/instinctive enough to be a CB, and he's not big/physical enough to be a safety. He just kind of stopped growing after HS. It happens.

You do realize that safety tackle stats are irrelevant, right? Means absolutely nothing. If anything, it’s usually not a good sign. We had one of the worst defenses in the history of the SEC last year. Being optimistic that one of the worst players on that unit is going to become a reliable player is delusional

Never have I ever heard that stats were irrelevant, but go off bud. May you have a great rest of your day.

Major Burns
Are not like this one.
Penn has always been a solid LB here. Ryan finally found a niche here playing outside corner which he played better than he ever played nickel here. He was the best corner on the team once Alexander went down and he played notably better there. Was he "good", probably not no. But he was the best option we had there and once again we're seeing via practice reports he still might be a top 2 corner this year on an entirely new coaching staff so I dont understand the shitting on him.
Burns has always been pretty rough. I could see him getting overtaken at some point if the younger guys catch on and he continues to have his "Burns" moments he tends to have. Safety is almsot as much a weak point as corner in reality. Jardin Gilbert is no the savior a lot of people are making him out to be. The dude missed a ton of tackles at A&M and had no starting spot to go back to once Matthews took over for him there.

To be fair, that’s because the decision was made that our DBs were so bad we had to play that way.
It wasn’t because House was just clueless.

Every player can improve year to year. Penn actually isn't a bad player. I bet he actually has a good year playing for baker in this scheme. He has played a lot of football at lsu.

Greg Penn was not the issue last year, that was Speights. Penn was actually very underrated.

Everyone in here crapping on Burns. He led the team in tackles. For almost every tackle he made, 10 other guys were out of position or failed. That’s a coach problem. Other teams out schemed us.

I don’t think Penn is that bad.
Burns….. hot and cold.
Sage I just don’t know.

Every year we have a player who this board is unsatisfied with develop to a higher level, and every year yall come on here and act like a player can’t get better past their freshman year. You’d think the JD5 stuff would’ve ended that

I’ve never seen anything out of Burns aside from the Mizzou pick.
Ryan completely underwhelms. I don’t think he has the twitch/fluidity to cover. Probably better suited to put on weight and play lb.
Then again, if I see Zy let another wr run by him…..
Hopefully, much of this was a result of coaching and opposing offenses playing with “House” money.
