re: We were the only SEC basketball team to lose today

Just hold your horses. LSU plays Stetson, UNO and MVSU before hitting the conference grind. Those three teams have Kenpoms in the 300's and should be a welcome tiramisu for the MBB Tigers.
I gotta say I'd rather us have scheduled it a bit differently - 3 terrible teams before getting into conference play in the best basketball conference in the country?

Exactly what this team needs, to build confidence. Texas just blasted UA-Pine Bluff last night.

Perhaps. But in each of the last two seasons LSU has played weak competition in the two weeks before the start of SEC play and they have opened SEC play with wins in each of those seasons over good teams. There are not a lot of reasons 2+ years in to give McMahon the benefit of the doubt, but the lead in to SEC play seems to be one of them. It's often been the second week of SEC play where things start to fall off.

I think of it a bit differently, playing teams that don't challenge you at all in any way shape or fashion, the 3 games before you begin to play teams that as good or in most cases this year better than you.....I see the downside of that as a bigger issue that whatever confidence you get from beating up on weak opposition.

I hear ya but I just don't see any benefit playing 3 teams that bad and all right in a row....none.

We didn't look that good, relied on the one-on-one ball too much.

There is nothign gained from playing literally the worst team in college basketball. Back in the day myself and 4 other dudes from the REC could go play against LSU and put up a similar if not better challenge than MS Valley State will. They lost 111-39 to Missouri. That's pathetic. There are high school teams that wouldn't lose that bad.

Ward had been a one-trick pony for LSU (spot up three point shooter). I'd make the argument the combination of Bailey and V. Miller at that position is a net positive for the team. You don't have the three point shooting, but you gain much more in just about ever other aspect.
The loss of Reed hurts because McMahon's teams have routinely been abysmal in the half-court offense. Reed as a guy who you could run sets for. Now, LSU doesn't really have that guy (though they are better defensively with Collins/Chest inside), which makes the halfcourt offense seemingly worse. LSU was already falling in the offense efficiency stats with Reed in. That's continuing at a quicker pace now. But I don't think Reed's loss takes them team from 10-11 SEC wins to 5-6. He's probably worth about 2-3 wins because there is the tradeoff of improved defense.
This is where I'm at. Reed hurts much, much more than ward. Vyc and Bailey are fine there.

I absolutely hate playing teams that will finish in the 300s in the NET, but you need to wake up about scheduling. Southland, SWAC, MEAC type teams have to load up on Q1 & Q2 games because thats what funds their programs.
Currently LSU SOS is rated 9 out of 16 for SEC teams.
As of now, LSU has 14 Q1 games left on their schedule. SOS will not be an issue for any SEC teams.

I like the team we have, but it is really thin right nnow. We do have some athletes who can cause issues for the best of teams. The veterans have to perform every night and the freshmen have to grow up fast.

Losing to SMU is not a death knell because they will have so many opportunities in SEC play to get good wins. The downside is that the loss reduces what was likely an already thin margin for error for this team in SEC play. Expecting 10 or more wins is a big ask. Not just for LSU. It could possibly be the difference between getting 8 SEC wins and in and get 8 and out.
You don’t waive the white flag. But now you probably have to win an additional game in conference that you probably could have absorbed with the SMU win.

I highly doubt we would get in with 7 wins even with beating SMU or Pitt.
