We aren’t imagining things: Flags in the NFL are at a historical level this season

If tweet fails to load, click here. I truly barely celebrate any big play in the moment. I have been trained to “wait and look for a flag”

It's almost like watching the post bountygate Saints games when Roger had his refs out in full force against the Saints
If you looked at a WR wrong it was a pass interference while the Seahawks could mug you at will

The Bengals Jags game yesterday was obscene. Felt like half the plays had a flag.

I have felt like that for every bills game. So many flags on both teams

Reminds me of the current commercial where the outcome of the play keeps changing and different people are reacting.
Someone help me, can’t think of what’s being advertised so I can search for it.

Am I reading it right that they're mostly fricking the offenses?

Before that huge play where the Chiefs player broke his leg, I said “this will either be a successful play for the Chiefs or there’ll be a flag that gives them a first down”. The play was both successful and, Lost in the commotion of the injury, the refs threw a flag that would have resulted in a first down. If you can accurately predict before a play that a penalty will be called, you got a problem

I stopped watching after week 1.
I’ve got a half of a couple prime time games to see how some Alabama guys are doing, but I’m already out on NFL football.
This usually doesn’t happen to me until week 10 or so.

fricking up the flow of the game is no big deal for the NFL is people watch regardless. He could come right out say they follow a script and they wouldn’t lose viewers.

I mean, just playing devil’s advocate here (and full disclosure, I get frustrated with it also) but how many of these are a) false starts and b) legit fouls?
The amount of false starts and illegal formations is insane, especially considering this is a sport being played at the highest level and yet there seem to be more of these than there are at lower levels. But…are they not supposed to call them?
As far as legit calls, one of the things you hear the average football fan say is that offensive holding could be called every play but it isn’t. You had teams (the Seahawks) admitting that they mugged receivers on every play because they knew it wouldn’t get called every time and we still see this often. When you think of it this way, we’re actually lucky it isn’t worse.
Most block in the back penalties are in fact blocks in the back, so I don’t know what officials are supposed to do differently.
I guess what I’m saying is I understand the frustration but I don’t know if it’s not the players we should be frustrated with.
As I say, I get frustrated with it too, and especially the ticky tack stuff like illegal contact and God forbid you don’t land on the quarterback the way you were supposed to.

I don’t know the numbers but it just seems like for the last decade penalties have been trending up. It really does make the game unwatchable. DB’s seem to be called constantly for holding on what are usually minor offenses. Oh and spot foul PI’s need to change to 15 yard penalties

Defense holding, illegal contact, offensive holding
They seem to be calling these by the autistic letter of the law this season. It allows for almost no game flow

Skins had 9 plus penalties yesterday and a dog shite Colts team had 1. Took away a skins TD on a phantom illegal shift. Second game in a row they’ve pulled that on the skins. Multiple PIs missed. It’s just hilarious.

quote:The officiating in that game was abysmal all around. Ticky tack calls all over the place, obvious, meaningful penalties missed/ignored. The officiating is contributing bigly to the NFL becoming unwatchable.

They’re not in the NFL because they’re smart and heady players who play the game the right way within the rules. Those guys go pro in something other than sports.
When you want the fastest and strongest guys whether they know football or not, this is what you get. It is something how we hear all about yards and touchdowns players get but never about the yards they give up. There’s a league leader somewhere in penalty yards against his team but no one knows who it is. It’s like they don’t want to talk about it and it’s a memo from the NFL to their TV partners.

I don’t know how anyone can watch the NFL and NOT think outcomes are already determined before kickoff
Posted on 10/5/26 at 5:43 pm to lsupride87
NFL is way down in terms of quality this year across the board imo and this is a big reason why.

I think it's a Coke commercial.

17 touchdowns taken off the board by week 4 is fricking absurd, it doesn’t even seem possible
