I also thought Herman would be a good choice, but I changed my mind after finding out he was a member of MENSA.
You have to be weird and insecure as all hell to join MENSA.
Im weird and insecure, and just plain dumb so no MENSA for me

I didn’t really want BK but this is the correct answer.

I mean this respectfully. There were A LOT more options than you are anyone are discussing.
I’m assuming that you aren’t a AD at a college & I am not either along w the other people in this thread.
There should be many, many options including NFL OCs & DCs, etc for someone who is an AD. it’s what he is paid to do & he has a staff to help him. We need to quit acting like there are many options.

IMO it’s not that he took a chance on BK it’s that he overpaid and mortgaged LSU to get him after doing the same thing to A&M..

I wanted Lincoln, Kiffin, Fickell/Aranda, then Napier. Wasn’t a fan of Jimbo or Mel Tucker. Rhule didn’t seem realistic after just making the leap to NFL.
I don’t think BK was ever on anyone’s radar. IMO, it felt like an out of nowhere hire.
I still like Kiffin a lot, and I think now he could actually win a title here. He’s getting $9M/yr now. I’m guessing UF will prob offer him $11-12/yr. Whether he takes it or not, I’m not sure LSU would look like fools to match or pay $13+ for the next hire.

You've left off dozens of coordinators who have gone on to be successful head coaches. 10 years $100MM with 90% guaranteed with NO MITIGATION clause is a non-starter for anyone not named Nick Saban at the time. That unimaginative list of "hot names" is the reason why LSU (and all of those other programs who overpaid their respective fools) is in this mess.

Those weren’t the only options. Here’s a couple others:
Dan Lanning
Kalen DeBoer
Joey McGuire
No one had even heard of Kalen DeBoer at the time. He was never mentioned

I dont even remember BK being a candidate. Nobody even considered him a possibility and then when he popped up as the hire it seemed like a homerun. He was more established/respected/accomplished than all the other names mentioned.

It was a big surprise. We all thought it was Lincoln Riley

I left off the dozen of coordinators because Woodward was never going to hire a coordinator in 2021.
He was going for someone with HC experience. That was known in 2021 so thats why the candidates were who they were

I also wanted Herman back then. I wasn't crazy about Kelly because I wanted Riley but I was still optimistic after the hire. The 10 year contract really sucks though and I hope we don't do that again. We have to find a way to structure it to be more incentive based with a very high ceiling. It will be worth paying 15+mil if the wins/championships are there.

At the time, my order was Kiffen, Rhule, Riley.

BK
Lincoln Riley (board favorite),
Napier
Luke Fickell (my choice at time)
Aranda
Jimbo
Mel Tucker
Matt Rhule
This list shows how bad the coaching search was. It's headed to be equally bad this time around if lessons aren't learned. Don't chase HC experience. Find an up and coming coordinator to lock down one side of the ball. That's the difference between our coaching search vs Oregon, Ohio State, and UGA. Plus it'll be cheaper and we can spend the savings on players

Riley was who I was hoping for. I truly believe Riley would have better success at LSU than he is at USC.

With the exception of a about dozen HCs, every coach in CFB was in play. Woodward just didn't do his homework. Lazy as lazy Ed.

LSU wasn't going after a coordinator with zero head coaching experience.
maybe we should have, but for the most part, LSU has been pretty open about wanting guys who've had "successful" head coaching experience.
quote:
Curt Cignetti.
sure he's a hot name NOW, but go back to 2021
Coach A:
60 years old
multiple championships at lower levels
19 years of FBS Head coaching experience
10 of those 19 years with 10+ wins in a season
winningest coach in the history of a school in the top 5 in all time wins
Coach B:
60 years old
11 total year of head coaching
0 championships at those lower levels
0 years of FBS head coaching experience
no fricking way anyone would have picked Cignetti over Kelly in 2021.
and anyone who says they saw this coming is just lying to themselves.

Since BK was under contract with a top level program, why such a short list of "available" coaches? If you're willing to lure a coach away from a title contender with a massive contract, why isn't every top coach in the nation on your list?
Most of if not all of those other coaches were thought to be on the rise from smaller programs. FBK is certainly the outlier.

That’s my entire point.
Woodward’s dumb strategy causes us to miss out on better coaches AND have to give out massive terrible contracts.
