The second hole batter lays down a first pitch bunt back at the pitcher and sacrifices the runner to second, a routine play for every top program in the country, save LSU.

Bunting should never be used until the late innings. You’re doing the opponent a favor when you bunt unless it is a 1-run game late.

Bunting is generally a tactic used in strategic situations. Clearly, that would not be the case in the bottom of the first. No reason to surrender your two-hole hitter at that point in time.

But your point is a good one nonetheless.

The rant is just a group of fair weather fans who think they make a difference.

So many of you don't know what a fair weather fan is. If someone is here, often, whether they are happy or complaining, that isn't fair weather fandom. The ones you never see unless things are going great are fair weather fans. By definition anyone here to complain when things are going poorly cannot be fair weather fans, weather not being fair and all.

Bunting is fantastic when you have players you can count on to do it correctly.

There's always a place for a bunt.

this is like admiring a beautiful punt and wishing your team would punt more often

Its built in to the 80%. Giving away outs on the bases is dumb

So,you don't want to ever steal 2nd?

You just upped your odds of scoring.

When it's necessary and an obvious situation like a one run game in the 8th no outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, that's great. As a general philosophy or doing it early in the game with your best hitters is dumb.

No. Bunting is what you do when you have a bad hitter at the plate, with a runner on and less than two outs... IF you have a decent hitter on deck.

You don't get Crews on base to lead off, and then ask Morgan to bunt. That's wasting a great hitter.

Not stupid at all if you think it will be a low scoring game, the opposing pitcher is nails, and your team doesn't hit good pitching very well. THis is baseball the way it is supposed to be played. Not effective normally on Sunday when both teams are struggling with pitching and you suspect it may be a 14-12 game. But if you need one run to win, it is the play every time unless your best hitters are up and are hot. But to not be able to teach consistently effective bunting will be part of Paul's legacy as we lost way too many close ballgames after hitting into double plays.
