Thats not how it works. He's looking at multiple things, and if you watch the replay that shows more, he looks at the official further up the field, whose job is to also look at whether the feet are in bounds. Then he calls it a catch.

Jarvis could have ran the wrong route

Almost perfect ball placement by Joe - only his receiver could get to it. But, the level of concentration by Moss on where he was and where BOTH feet were was amazing. NFL play right there. More specifically, a Saints play.

So does just tipping the ball count as being the first player to touch the ball? It was ruled that he was forced out of bounds so it doesn't matter. I'm just curious if only tipping the ball makes it where they would rule that Moss wasn't the first person to touch the ball after coming back in.

Because that isn't his job. The linesman around the 10/15 yard line is the one who makes the determination if he was in bounds.

For all the shite we give officials, they were both in perfect position and handling their responsibility.

Man the replay “expert’s” attempt at explaining what should be called still has me cracking up

Gene Stelatore (sp) is an NFL referee, and they have different rules about establishing yourself back in bounds.

All of that being said, it would have been a catch at the NFL level too, since the guy touched it.

It thought this at the time, especially from that angle.

Announcers never mentioned it. They did an awful job trying to interpret/explain the rules. Especially the "rules expert" guy.

Yes. Similar if a ball is contested around the sideline or end zone during a punt/kick, it's dead as soon as someone outside the field of play touches it.

I saw that Jarvis catch vs Arky up close and it was one of the best catches I have ever seen in my life!

I do have to say the refs should have explained it better.

If one of them saw the touch by Diggs (eliminating the illegal touching), put it in the explanation after the review.

If instead of that they saw Moss forced out (eliminating the illegal touching), say that.

Without any of those two explanations everybody is left wondering how he could be the first to touch it.

He puts it inside it's a pick. Put it a little too much back shoulder, but still a good throw

And this catch is far more athletic and better then the diving catch

I saw this on the replay and was texting with a Bama fan about it. I told him it was a catch because it was touched by the defender first, then the expert said it was because he was forced out. It didn't look to me that he was forced out, it had to be the touch that confirmed it.

Well, it was the last one he threw as a Tiger. He was hit on the throw and re-injured his knee and left the game.

The stunned Arkansas bench was delicious.
