Hate to say this, but the fact is he couldn't carry his team to an NCAA tournament birth (barring miracle SEC tournament run). No, he did not live up to the hype.

So I guess Pistol Pete didn't live up to the hype either?

Why don't you idiots understand that basketball is a TEAM sport?

He had one of the best seasons in SEC history as a true freshman.

Not even close. Great stats mean nothing with the record we have. A player of his skill level should have led to better results.

I guess we need to rename the PMAC then. Pistol Pete is great stats and nothing more. Couldn't even get his team to the NCAA tourney. What a bust.

Simmons game is more suited for the NBA and he will be a superstar.

Not seeing it. Very limited offensive game. No jumper so can't play the 3 spot. No great repertoire of post moves and will get pushed around by big strong 4s. And no visible fire inside. I see a very average career ahead.

He will play the three and be an outstanding rebounder at that position. The pros run and gun a lot more than college so his grabbing rebounds and leading the break will be much more effective. The guys he passes the ball to will all be great scorers and make his assist stats much better also.

He will be encouraged to work on his jumper and make it part of his game. Whether he can do that or not remains to be seen but he will be a good player/starter without it, just not an all star.

just one example of what college basketball has become. I used to love it but would support LSU disbanding the team and adding another sport (ok, two sports due to title nine)

When will YOU idiots realize that we no longer live in the era when good players stuck around till their were Juniors and Seniors.

College basketball, on the whole, is a pretty crappy brand of ball compared to what it was even 20 years ago.

Today, if you have the supposed #1 pick plus other guys that are supposed to be NBA products, you are supposed to make the dance........PERIOD.

There are going to be MULTIPLE TEAMS making the dance that don't have ONE player that will EVER even set foot in the NBA.

So all the more reason the Pistol Pete team should have been successful.

No doubt this TEAM was supposed to make the dance. But the failure is not because of Ben. If it were common for consensus #1 prospects to choose schools like LSU, you would see it happen a lot more often. The vast majority go to Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, etc.

Yea, it is a team sport. Not an individual sport.

He didn't in terms of play but in terms of bringing massive pub to Lsu he did. Lsu games that would've normally not been on tv were on this year and the hype and constant "Ben Love" that announcers showered him with was off the charts for a team not even making the dance.

Simmons was the most consistent scoring threat EVERY night on the team.

If the rest of team were that consistent and CJJ wasn't a dumbass, then they would already have punched their ticket.

True, but great players usually can lead and take over games when needed to win more games. Didn't happen here.

Reminds me of Jamarcus Russell. Worlds of potential, but doesnt seem committed to being great. Just using the God given talent and will be content to be a millionaire pro player, but i doubt will ever reach his potential.

Nope.

I was disappointed with his...

ball handling-other than on fast breaks he didn't look special

passing-too many turnovers and bad passes

shooting-outside 5ft he has no offensive game
defense-good with steals but terrible around the rim in disrupting shots and rarely protected the rim even though he had many chances to block shots

intangibles- look at our record

leadership- look at our record

His stats were impressive. He showed flashes, he was clearly ahead of the other players on the team. His jumper isn't good though and he shrunk in our biggest moments. I would expect the best player in the country to demand the fricking ball when going against the top team in the country with 5 mins left.

Simmons is a great player and with a better coach he would have been even better than he was.

A good coach would have held him accountable on D and we would have seen just how much better he was than the rest of college basketball. Its sad but even cal would have produced more with Simmons.
