re: So did Ben Simmons live up to the hype?

Yes! He is a talented player and seems like a great young man. He will do well in the NBA. No man can carry any team, it takes a team effort in order to consistently win. Its sad that many have resorted to taking jabs at him and questioning his ability.

But I hope you enjoyed watching basketball for the first time in your life.
It is quotes like these that make me hate tigerdroppings sometimes. Who the hell are you to make that assumption based on OP's post?
Based off your post, I don't think you have ever watched basketball. The hype Ben Simmons had coming in to the season was nothing short of a championship run led by an unstoppable Ben Simmons. He was already being called the greatest of all time, drawing comparisons to a young Lebron and even Michael Jordan.
Let down of a season. Massive let down of a season.

he was compared to magic for his fluid passing. He showed that off but the rest of our players botched so many assist opportunities. He still didn't take over a game like he should at the end. The great players will pick the team up and carry them. Heild fricking did it in our building.
Posted on 3/7/16 at 8:37 am to JEAUXBLEAUX
No. Over-rated. No burning desire. Not a competitor. Lack of effort. Can't teach "want to". Will NEVER get to the levels of Magic and Lebron.

My biggest issue. Dude never seemed to want to take the game over. I feel as if every game with about 5-7 to go I would say to myself: alright Ben, time to take this over. And it just never really happened.
Happy to have seen him play in person. If he goes on to be great, fantastic. Don't ever see him being a great ambassador for LSU like some of the other incredible talents we have had come from all of our major sports.

Exactly, I'm not saying he had to carry us to victory but he shriveled up at the end of games. Jordan, Magic and other greats don't crawl into the corner at the end. He was a great player but he didn't live up to the magic/lebron hype.
That might not be all on him, I think some of that falls on Jones for not being able to control this team. He got the horses in but unlike greasy cal he can't manage them.

There are going to be MULTIPLE TEAMS making the dance that don't have ONE player that will EVER even set foot in the NBA.
How many of those teams are in conferences where there are no at-large teams, and you have to win the conference tournament to get in?
Posted on 3/7/16 at 8:45 am to JEAUXBLEAUX
No he didn't. To be fair though, nobody could live up to the kind of hype he was getting.

dead wrong. In basketball, one player can absolutely change a team's season.

He didn't live up to the hype but I don't blame it all on him. JJ is just a terrible coach. Hard to be successful when your coach has no clue what he's doing.

Was he a little overhyped? Maybe.. Generational talent? Yes... Ben just didnt/doesn't have the killer instinct that makes players into legends... However, he did raise LSU notoriety and brought attention back to a once proud program. Ironically, that may be Johnnie's undoing because having a "surefire" tournament team brought expectations that may have been a little unrealistic. Even with the M&M boys for the last two years of college, they still struggled at times and one could say this year team was not as good as those teams of recent past, especially with two freshmans being your best players down the stretch.
I feel Ben was used poorly most of the time. He should of developed his post play for what this team needed. Yes, it's great that he "is" a point-forward, but we didn't need for him to be that on this team. He needed to be running the lanes on fastbreaks to finish at the rim and he needed to be posting up on players at least 75% of the time. Especially when shots weren't falling from the perimeter amongst the team.
Nonetheless, he will likely be remembered for bringing attention to the program, but just like this year's team, he will be remembered for being a frustrating player with undeniable skills but needing to "grow" into a leader. I compare him to Martin their freshman years. Jarell too, was an undeniable talent that just needed to mature some and we saw him blossom into a leader and would take over late in his sophomore season. I'm sure if we had another year with Ben it would of been the same, but #1 pick is waiting on him and so all we could do is wonder what may have been with another year.
Ben did his part, we were hoping and expecting more, but I knew this team was not as good as the two previous teams. If only Martin would have stayed, but such is life. I went to 7 home games this year and that's the most since the Big Baby-Thornton years. So I think he did what he was suppose to do, he just needed a little more help in the post on this team but that seems to be the story of LSU basketball, always a player who should of stayed one more year in order for the next year team to exceed the accomplishments of the prior year (Martin, Mickey, Randolph, Big Baby, etc.).

He had a good season numbers wise but I can't even begin to understand how anyone can say he lived up to the hype he had coming into the season.
Posted on 3/7/16 at 9:34 am to JEAUXBLEAUX
Short answer is no.
I still have a lot of respect for him and think he will do extremely well in the NBA.

I will assume that some of you are in the know on basketball but it appears to me, as only slightly interested because of lsu sports, that he if he is a number 1 pick this is not as good of a draft year as the year Shaquille was drafted. I don't see Ben as a huge difference maker on any team even if it looks like he could play for any team because of his ball handling skills, and passing skills. The man cant hit a mid range to short jumper and is better shooting away from the basket with one hand than two. Glad he came to LSU and generally enjoyed watching him even if the team frustrated me with bad shots, little defense, out of control offense and no real desire to run set plays.

me either. I see plenty of big men that handle the ball better than BS also...and can drain 3's.

He'd be the #1 pick in almost every single draft outside of a few with all-time great prospects like Lebron and Shaq.

Neither could AD when he entered the league, and now he has one of the best in the NBA and has added the 3. He's 19 years old and has a size and skillset that very few have had in basketball. Most of the guys with it end up in the Hall of Fame.

You see plenty?
Name them, then compare their game when they were 19
