Why A&M? We have better baseball history with Ole Miss and Arkansas than A&M. I can agree on MSU.
History...

Beating #1 A&M in their regional in 1989 to make it to Omaha was the event that signaled Skip Bertman's LSU program had "arrived". LSU came through the loser's bracket (back when regionals were 6 teams), had to win twice on the final day. A&M was 58-5 on the year, and had won their regional games to that point 23-3, 25-4, and 17-6.
LSU won the first game with Ben McDonald as the starter, and won the 2nd in extra innings, with Ben coming back to pitch the last couple of innings.

A&M was considered so good that season, the final polls still picked them #2 behind national champ Wichita State.

We played Rice a bunch too. Are they a rival?

Being shoehorned into permanently playing A&M completely sucks. It’s like being assigned a group project with a special education student. It’s embarrassing by its very nature.

You know why I don’t view A&M as a rival? Because they aren’t. They are a joke.

Skip had taken LSU to Omaha twice before then. It was not LSU’s “arrival”. Was it one of the biggest moments in LSU baseball history, sure. But LSU was already a big player on the national scene by that point.

I'd say on the national level, it was.

Yes, we'd been to Ohama in 86 and 87, and had done little there. We went 39-21 in '88, and were left out of the postseason entirely. That's not a sign the program was respected nationally.
Starting with 89, we then went 17 straight seasons, won the first national title in 91.

Either way, we have as much good history with A&M as any other SEC school outside of Miss State.
I'm just happy we're not stuck with someone like Kentucky, who has zero history.

People cry too much on these boards about LSU's opponents; someone is getting Vandy as a permanent opponent in football.

Tennessee needs to be on LSU's list....it will quickly become the best rivalry in the SEC.

SEC SHOULD have no permanent rivals in any sport. It makes scheduling unbalanced and potentially unfair. Yes, I know, I am spitting in the wind.

Ok so you don’t think they’re a rival. I’m curious were born after 1990? I’m genuinely curious if your opinion is driven by age.

As a kid growing up in the 80’s it seemed as if A&M was one of our biggest rivals. We opened up the season with them almost every year. We beat their highly ranked team twice at their regional to earn a trip to Omaha. A&M stole Bucky Richardson and returned the favor by stealing Harvey Williams.

To me it’s not a”shoe horned” rivalry; it’s the resurrection of a rivalry that was killed by conference expansion in 1992.

They aren’t adding more SEC games and they never will. A 30 game SEC schedule with no breaks is brutal enough.

Fair question. I’m almost 50 and was a kid in the 80’s too. I have no emotion toward A&M whatsoever.

LSU has handily dominated the football series against the Aggies; I can’t think of a single meaningful or memorable football game we’ve ever played against them. And we are giving up Florida and Auburn for these idiots? Please.

…but we are rivals because of a baseball regional in 1989? I’m unmoved, sorry. A&M in general is comic relief against college athletics as a concept. They aren’t actually good at anything and never accomplish anything meaningful.

Be honest with yourself. A&M is BENEATH LSU. Again, I’d much rather play Auburn or Florida. This sucks.

Fair answer-

the SEC is trying to make this work for everyone, not just us.

We don't really care too much about A&M, but they obsess over us. The overall series record is 35-23-3, in LSU's favor.

For perspective, WE obsess about Alabama in football. We constantly scream about getting to play them.
Do you think they care about LSU?
The overall series in that is 55-27-5, Alabama.
We won 5 games in a row against them from 2003-2007; the ONLY time we've won more than 2 in a row.
And you can't say we're getting better, we've lost 8 of the last 10 to them.

So, forgive me if I don't get indignant about this schedule. We get to play Alabama, A&M and Ole Miss get to play us.

This is perhaps why the common opponents aspect comes in...Tradition would lend to at least 1 common opponent for some schools, who would not want to lose those opponents:
Texas - Texas A&M
Ole Miss - Miss State
Alabama - Auburn
Vandy - Tennessee
Georgia - Florida
That would leave these possibilities for 6 schools:
Oklahoma - Mizzou
Kentucky - So. Carolina
Arky - LSU

Most teams try to schedule at least one challenging weekend before conference play begins. If there were no permanent opponents, schools would play everyone 2 out of every 3 years. In the off year, they could schedule their rival in the pre-conference slate. In fact, they could work it out to have 3 such opponents over the 3 year cycle if they had that many teams they were intent on playing every year.

So, no.
Alabama 49 wins, Auburn 37 wins, 1 tie
Alabama 58 wins, Tennessee 39 wins, 7 ties.

Those are Bama's other two permanents.

What's interesting about the Bama-UT series: Bama just won 15 in a row, before Tennessee won this year. So prior to Tennessee's collapse, they had pulled to within 44-38.
