If Baker and the D can cut down 50+ yards on the YPG allowed then I am content. I think that would leave us in good shape. Is that too much to ask? Seems realistic to me

I also just need to see some decent open-field tackling because last year they couldn't do it worth a shite

I honestly can't recall anyone saying Baker would have a top 20 defense this year. I feel most just want to see our defense improve and evolve. At least look well coached.

Youtube comments, Twitter, even a few on this board have made ridiculous statements about Baker and Perkins.

I'm just think our fans are going to be upset when we lose 3-4 games this year. I think we are in the exact same position as last year, with a QB who should be able to succeed, but may struggle. He lost 2 1st Round WRs, but has talent behind it. Going to be a lot of shootouts, because Baker isn't going to be able to perform miracles. We've got 3rd string offensive lineman turning into DTs. It's going to be a project.

70th, which was Ole Miss had 382.2 yards per game. 34 yards per game was the entire difference.

Is that really drastic?

Yes, it’s drastic.

To put it into perspective:

In 2022, LSU’s defense averaged 354.6 yards per game. In 2023, we averaged 416.6 ypg defensively. That’s a difference of 62 ypg year-to-year.

If you look at games against FBS teams with winning records, LSU averaged 372.4 ypg in 2022 and 498.7 ypg in 2023. That’s a difference of 126.3 ypg (!) year-to-year.

So our defense was 62 ypg worse in 2023 when you look at the full season, but it was 126 ypg worse in games that mattered (against winning teams who can actually beat you).

A major statistical difference in key games can look marginal in full-season stats because of the way CFB schedules work out.

Seems like a good time to re-visit the commitment video of this season's new starting QB:

If we had tackling last year, our defense is probably top 50. And I stand on that.

Have you been paying attention this off-season? Ole Piss will be the toughest game on our schedule this season...

I keep saying it over and over. Our fans are putting MASSIVE pressure on Baker and Perkins with these ridiculous assumptions that Baker is going to have a top 20 defense and that Perkins is going to have 10 Sacks next year. That's simply not the case. We have a week dline, and our secondary is going to be almost the exact same
I don't expect a Top 20 defense, or a defense that otherwise would be what we used to have under Saban and Miles. People tend to forget, our defense USED to be good enough to win 90% of the games, as long as the offense and special teams don't actively lose it.

What I DO expect, is a defense that looks coached. Our D Line was left to fend for itself last year. We needed to bring an 80 yr old out of retirement just to run drills in practice. That should not be the case this year.

A coached up defense can make a difference.

Ladies and gentlemen, our fan base in exactly one quote.

So you expect a top 10 defense. Got it.
