My best friends dad and Woodley were close buddies, were in each others weddings. He Would always tell us his story to persuade us away from the drugs and booze. Sad stuff.

KC, I can see you know nothing about "peer-reviewed studies". Research it all first as have I for more than 35 years and get back to me. There is NO medical reason to consume alcohol in any form.

What good comes from it? Be specific.

Thanks.

Is anyone not troubled by the fact that alcohol is pushed so much by the ptb? The NFL is a huge advocate of drinking as are many on this board. Nothing good comes from drinking. It has destroyed more lives than all other drugs combined. Why is it promoted so

It’s promoted because most people like it and can enjoy it without it destroying their lives.
Everyone can make their own decisions on how to use it.

I remember watching him and Ensminger play. He had a lot of talent. Truly a tragedy.

Had him as a patient when I was on the Internal Medicine service as a third year med student back in 1993. That was, I believe when his illness first became manifest. It was sad to see, but he was gracious and humble to me as a med student, and I'll never forget that. I visited with him a good bit. I remember wondering how he wound up at the safety net hospital (he was at LSUHSC-S)- an arc that was undoubtedly radically different from most of the patients that I encountered at that stage of the game for me. Sad story.

A starting lineman on the 1983 Orange Bowl team died of liver failure a couple of years ago. Married to a Golden Girl, had a great job and family. He lost it all and eventually his life.

David was a Byrd grad - along with his brother, Joe, who still lives in Shreveport and is an attorney.

I got obnoxiously drunk at the A&M game on 11/27. Waking up that Sunday morning with a bad hangover and realizing this was just about every weekend, I decided to stop drinking for a month. That was not an easy time of year to quit drinking but I made it and have only had 2 beers since then which I didn't even drink half of.
The book that helped me is "This Naked Mind". It points out, among other things, that alcohol is a poison. It holds the status in our society because that's business.

I remember going to Tiger Stadium as a young boy and watching both Woodley and Ensminger quarterback the Tigers. Some of the most happiest days of my teenage years were spent in that stadium watching all the Tigers compete for one common goal, a win. It’s a bygone era. The players during that time loved LSU and the state of Louisiana. Much different than the young immature egos that we deal with today.

You are exactly right. The alcohol is poison. Poison in any amount is harmful to our minds and bodies. Everyone that downvoted your reply has been led into believing that red wine has health benefits. Compared to bourbon, rum, vodka, etc., yes, red wine is better for you. However, take the alcohol out of the wine and that is better than with it.

Probably starting out gathering and eating fermented fruit as "cavemen". Then man learned that squeezing the juice out of fruit and allowing it to sit produced an alcoholic beverage after a few or more weeks as early as several thousand BC. They didn't know why the beverage became fortified with alcohol...it was just magic to them.

A rough explanation of its progress was that it was antiseptic - when groups of humans congregated they invariably polluted the natural water supply. Beer was known as something that dint make you sick.

If fact, some propose that the production of beer was the impetus for the agricultural revolution which gave rise to the feasibility of large cities, hence civilization as we know it.

Stories like these help remind some of us why we can’t drink anymore.. I still miss the warmth and calm from that first drink but for me it only hid the realities of life sometimes.. I wish my body and mind could manage alcohol normally but I can’t.

what good comes from ice cream? it’s loaded with fat and sugar and isn’t good for you. But i enjoy the taste.

I like the taste of beer. My wife likes wine. it’s a social lubricant. Not a damn thing wrong with that.

Personal enjoyment of a lot of things, in moderation, is ok.

Not saying it applies in Woodley's case but many people with mental illness turn to drugs and/or alcohol to "self medicate".
