Tigers enter the game on a hot streak serious underdogs to a Tennessee team that is going to the national championship with a win. Rohan has a bum ankle (daniels) and Matt Mauck comes in and saves the world and goes down in lsu history
For those that are young and grew up thinking the sec championship is nothing but a bowl trophy that is false. 21 years ago lsu finally made it to Atlanta, a feat that was thought to be unattainable given the state of the program in the 90s and against a heavy favorite national championship contender.
And you know what they did? They shocked the world, and paved the way for the glory days of the 2000s. Don’t write off this game Saturday tiger fans. It’s a privelage to be in Atlanta.

I get the sentiment but it's not quite the same. UGA has been the team to beat in the SEC all year. UT wasn't that year, Florida was. In fact, UT was twice as big of underdogs to Florida the week before than we were in the SEC CG if that gives you any indication.
I remember being at the Auburn game and everyone being shocked that Tennessee won, and when we learned that UT was going to be in the SEC CG instead of Florida, our fans had hope that we could actually beat them especially after how we whipped up on Auburn that week. We played both UT and UF before the SEC CG, Florida dismantled us in Tiger Stadium, Tennessee beat us by 8 in Knoxville even with Kelley Washington going off.

True. I’m just saying this was the only sec championship out of 6 that the tigers were an underdog and at the time Atlanta was a goal that narrowly missed our grasp in 97 and 98 and it was huge what we were in that position. Tennessee, while beatable, was the better team and everybody wrote them in to playing Miami in the championship and the tigers rose up
Is this the same scenario exactly? No. We’ve been a better program than uga since 2001, the point is to remind fans not to take for granted a shot at the sec championship like it’s the Texas bowl. Hell after 2011 it took us 8 years to get back

I will say this, 2001 is still the biggest upset in SECCG history, but generally not too many upsets happen in this game and if they do they're usually mild upsets like Bama over Florida in 2009 was like a 4 point spread or something I think. When a team is favored this badly in the SEC CG they don't lose. I just think that as time has gone by the narrative around that 2001 game has been exaggerated a bit. I don't remember going into that game expecting to be blown out or that UT was penciled in to win at all, a lot of us thought we had a pretty decent shot going in and then when we pulled it off I remember being jubilated but I don't remember being too surprised. Tennessee was the favorite yes but they weren't that big of a favorite. Not to take away from what the game meant though, it was our first SEC title in a long time and first in the CG format and obviously a big win for momentum in the Saban era, along with the Sugar Bowl win against Big Ten champ Illinois.
LSU has pulled off crazier things though and I'll be keeping the hope and belief alive until it's over because that's what us fans do. I do agree with you that we shouldn't take this for granted because making it here is never guaranteed any year so you have to make the most of it when you reach there. I do think UGA has some vulnerabilities, particularly Stetson, but we have got to strike quick and early and try to do what A&M did to us and shorten the game. That 1st quarter in the A&M game was over in a flash and we never really got a chance to counter them until late in the half. If we can do that and keep it low scoring I think we have a shot if we can keep it at least within a score by the end of the game. And I don't think these guys are going to go out like they did against A&M. Maybe we can do what South Carolina did when they didn't score a single offensive point against Florida's terrible defense and then suddenly they beat two top 10 teams and look damn good doing it. Just because we looked bad last week doesn't mean we're going to be the same team next week, anyone who's watched enough CFB in their lives can tell you that. I think we'll play better this week, but I just wonder if we'll play better enough to win, we also need UGA to not be on their A game kinda like how they weren't in the SEC CG last year.

Uga has been playing with their opposition because they’re bored. They’ve won 27 straight home games and have looked bad in a lot because they toy around before the KO shot. If tigers catch them slipping early they will get caught on the jaw and drop to the mat. Let’s frickin geaux.

Well maybe this time they F Around and Find Out.
If LSU gets an offense rolling early we can win this game.

Thanks for posting. Amazing how the game has changed, I saw what would be two penalties today on the first few plays.

Possibly my favorite game ever. Sat a few rows from field as a student. Depressing that makes me old now.

Tennessee took Ro out of that game with a cheap shot out of bounds. His mom then put a curse on them. Look what's happened to them since then, including this year..

I was 12 and at this game. Was awesome and one my favorite games I’ve attended over the years. This year is similar to 2001.

That’s exactly what happened. In the days of no one having a scoreboard on their phone in their pocket news leaked slowly by word of mouth. When people found out Tennessee won everyone’s reaction was “wow we might have a chance now.” But that was before the game, though. People thought LSU wound have a chance to beat Tennessee before the game against Auburn even kicked off.

I think of this picture every time I think the game.

No one thinks that. An SEC championship has always been a big deal

Hindsight is 20/20. I don't know how many people really thought LSU had a good chance to beat Tennessee. But I guess because we had such PTSD in watching LSU consistently get their brains beat in by Florida for so many years anything was better than playing them in that game. The hope was also predicated on the fact LSU was red hot at that time. After the listless loss to Ole Miss, LSU completely opened up the passing game against Alabama (I remember complaints prior to the Alabama game about how Jimbo was WAY to conservative as an OC).
Unfortunately, the trajectory of the team feels much different going into the SECCG. LSU is coming off two bad SEC performances vs. Arkansas and A&M. If LSU comes out with the same approach they brought to those two games Georgia is going to easily win by double-digits. But, if they are willing to throw a bit of caution to the wind because the pressure of a potential playoff berth is gone they may have a shot to make UGA uncomfortable (pending the health of Daniels). Stranger things have happened. South Carolina looked pretty much dead in late October/early November with two double-digit losses to Florida and Missouri. They then suddenly looked great against two teams (Tennessee and Clemson) who were in the playoff hunt.
If there was ever a game for LSU to take some chances...Saturday is it
