I thought TN would play for the national championship if not for the loss to LSU. I suppose 21 years alters memories?

I’ve been thinking for half the season and still after the A&M debacle, this year’s team has 2001 vibes. We are flawed but showed improvement through the year. Got boat-raced by a top 5 team at home. But you can feel something brewing in the program even in defeat. And like 2001, we found a way to Atlanta.

Saturday is going to be a tall order to win, but play like we did against Bama and we can certainly hang with UGA. Maybe, just maybe even shock the world one more time.

Tennessee was in the National Title game were it not for the SECCG loss to LSU. I’d say they were the team to beat?

Hindsight is 20/20. I don't know how many people really thought LSU had a good chance to beat Tennessee. But I guess because we had such PTSD in watching LSU consistently get their brains beat in by Florida for so many years anything was better than playing them in that game.

The words out of my mouth were "LSU could actually win that game". LSU went to Knoxville earlier in September and played Tennessee tough.

They were #2 because Nebraska got 60+ hung on them by Colorado, Oklahoma lost Bedlam, and Tennessee upset Florida as over 2 TD dogs which caused them to leap Oregon and Texas. I don't think people really remember how much of a clusterfrick the last couple weeks of 2001 was.

Tenn was a good team but like I said every Tiger fan alive was glad to see them instead of the Grossman/Spurrier Florida team, many still say to this day that was the best team Spurrier ever had. The feeling going into that game was way more optimistic than what we're going into against UGA. Had Florida been the opponent that game then the feelings would probably be comparable.

I was there and that place was going nuts when Dominick Davis went over the top for the go ahead TD. That atmosphere will never be matched b/c we were so happy to be in the Champ game.

i agree with you

2001 florida = no chance
2001 Tennessee = Hey we beat them last year and played them to a hail mary pass this year. we got a shot against them.

That is what i remember the reaction being around that time. Everyone expected Florida to win. when Tenn did instead everyone got excited cause we knew we had a shot against them. Not sure why people are acting like they were Juggernaut that year.
