You reward with a one-time bonus, not a long term contract extension with exorbitant buyout when there is no demand for that coach's services elsewhere.
I imagine it has more to do with it than just the fact we all knew O was a lucky buffoon.
These coaches have agents who have other clients across various sports for a reason. An AD has to manage more than just football, and burning an agent relationship could be a big problem.
Negotiation strategy must be interesting to study across a whole department. I do enjoy the money talk bullshite walks aspect of this. Everyone talks a big game about the other sports mattering until football goes south

Yall dumbasses dont realize, thats the price of doing business these days. His contract is not any thing different out of the top coaches.
It’s way different. Here is when the contract or latest extension was signed for each of those coaches:

You listed 19 contracts. 12 of them are either new contracts or extensions that were signed in 2024-2025. Those guys have either been hired recently or extended because of their performance. If we were extending Brian Kelly’s contract, his $53 million buyout wouldn’t be a big problem because we’d be extending him, not firing him.
But that’s not what happened. Instead, Kelly has the oldest contract in that entire list. Yet his buyout is the 6th highest - not because he was recently extended based on good performance, or recently hired, but because we were locked into a huge contract years ago.
The guys on that list (presumably a list of highest paid coaches) who signed their current contracts prior to 2024 were:
- Lincoln Riley: mediocre results
- Dabo Swinney: currently 3-4
- Brian Kelly: fired
- Mark Stoops: 1-12 in SEC play the last 2 years
- Matt Rhule: 9-14 in B1G play
- James Franklin: fired
- Mario Cristobal: having a good year
That’s the company Kelly’s contract is in.

He was fired in Nov 23. That 40 m number is high.
He was hired in 2017 for 2018-2028. So after 3 years he got the extension. So 22.5 was earned. Granted he was extended in 2021, doesn’t excuse the fact that it was all Guaranteed. In fact, considering it was only 3 years in before the extension, Woodward guaranteed him 75M and he only earned 22.5 of that. That’s 52.5M A&M were stuck with either way.
Let me revise my numbers…
54 with Kelly
52.5 with Fisher
17 with O…
You can’t excuse the AD that made the hire because he went to another school. Fisher was guaranteed that much and TAMU forked over that plus his extension.
Guaranteed is Guaranteed.

He had to, he just won a national championship.

The extension was not on Woody. Although he indirectly had a hand in it.

The guaratee without mitigatiion is the rub.

Woodward is universally hated by two large fanbases now. I suspect his term is nearing a close when your President is seated.
ATM fans who hate him are full of shite considering that Jimbo was the only candidate on their list. It's nice to not taking any responsibility for anything
A&M was mad Woodward left at the time. They, and their boosters, demanded he go get Jimbo and he did, at $7.5m a year. He didn't give him the ridiculous extension. At the time of hiring, it was a huge win for A&M to get Jimbo, a national title winning coach.
Kelly was considered a good to great hire by almost everyone involved in college football. shite didn't work out, which happens, and he got him out of here quickly, with private money.
The hate for Woodward is based on revisionist history. He's a world class fundraiser and has hired football coaches that were considered the very top of what was possible.

So..
unknown to Riley.... and he has not done better than Kelly
60m to Swinney ... he has not done bettter than Kelly
40m to Stoops..... terrible
50m to Rhule.... again no better than Kelly
50m to Franklin..... no better
unknown to Cristabal.... And that at 10th right now losing to Louisville. 7th in the ACC with a 2-1 record. They still have a lot to prove. and could easily lose 2+ more.
So tell me how am i wrong in saying his contract isnt ridiculous compared to everyone else.

Great. But his hires for football and MBB, the two sports that produce income for LSU Athletics, have failed miserably.

What did that initial contract look like?
$75 million over 10 years guaranteed, so his original guaranteed contract would have run thru December 31, 2027 making Woodward responsible for 4 more seasons after Jimbo’s termination at original rate or $30 million of that buyout per original terms.
The extension also included a raise that started in 2022 with annual increases, and those raises thru original end date shouldn’t be held against Woodward. Don’t know if original also had any type of automated pay raises, but extension had that jump in base to $9 million for 2022 and then a $150,000 increase for 2023 along with $100,000 annual increases afterwards thru the end of extended contract.
Just going by the below paragraph it appears the original contract had zero mitigation aspects which is why Jimbo doesn’t have to search for jobs or have what is owed reduced by salary at any new job. Not sure if in original contract the almost $20 million payment due to Jimbo within 60 days of termination was a set dollar amount, set # of years paid in advance, or a percentage of remaining contract (later two seem more likely), but these 2 items basically took away any chance to negotiate a lower amount paid earlier than required and at least appear to have existed in original contract (and just kept in extension).
quote:
Fisher's contact was extended by four (4) years until December 31, 2031. The terms of the new contract include an annual salary of $9,000,000 starting on January 1, 2022 and will increase to $9,150,000 on January 1, 2023. In each of the following years, the base salary increases by $100,000 on January 1. All other terms relative to performance incentives and other elements remain the same.

AT the time, no one thought so.
And who could've foreseen all the crap that unfolded in 20-21?

Nobody would care had he won 2 of the 3 games he lost this season.
DeBoer's contract is what, 8yr/$87M? He has the same number of nattys as BK. Although his team is having a good year, they could have easily lost to vandy and USCe.

Eh I think many people thought a massive raise and extension was crazy given no one else wanted him and he wasn’t leaving

That was not dumber, he won a Natty. No comparison.
First, the O model was supposed to be pay O less and spend the extra money on top coordinators. Just because O wins a NC doesn't mean you blow up that whole model.
(by the way, that model was idiotic, and I said so at the time).
Second, part of a big extension and raise after a great season is to prevent your coach from getting poached. No legit school was trying to lure O away so he was at no risk of leaving.

Well I already explained how it’s wrong compared to 12 of the 19 names on your list.
But sure, when compared against the other 6 worst contracts in college football, Kelly’s contract looks somewhat normal.
