Well I already explained how it’s wrong compared to 12 of the 19 names on your list.
check back in 4 years abt it will be JUST like half or more than those 12 names.

But sure, when compared against the other 6 worst contracts in college football, Kelly’s contract looks somewhat normal.
So im right...

The defending of Woodward reminds me a lot of the defending of Kelly when he was hired. Woodwards last two football coaching hires were extremely expensive disasters. He would have handed that same extension to jimbo. He loves jimbo. Stop defending this clown. He fired wade. He screwed over Moffitt. And he hired the is clown Kelly when it was very clear he was a mediocre coach who was extremely unlikeable.

Woodward just extended Ed O which was an even dumber move.

Dumb take. You win a natty you get an extension. Thems the rules.

It was completely different from all of those except Riley.
Standard protocol has been to offer a new coach around 6 years when he starts, not 10. Once they prove themselves they get that big extension.

quote:

Smart.............13m/yr.........105m

Original contract: 6 years, $22.5M in 2015
it wasn't until he won back to back national championships did he sign a 10 year $130M full guaranteed contract. See the difference?

quote:

Day ...............12.5 m/yr......71m

Original Contract: 5 years $22.5M in 2019
After winning a national championship he signed a 7 year $87.5M contract, and his buyout is $11.5M divided by the number of years remaining on his contract. See the difference?

quote:

Lanning .........10.4m/yr.......56m

Original contract: 6 years, $29.1M in 2021
After 3 years and going 35-6, he signed a new 6 year $65.4M contract, apparently has no buyout, or none i could find.

quote:

Deboer ..........10.2m/yr.......60.8m

It was 8 years for $87M, with a buyout of 90% of remaining salary.

quote:

Riley...............11.5 m/yr......Unknown

10 years $110M reportedly or more, with a ridiculous buyout.
How's that working out for them?

quote:

Swinney ........11.4m/yr.......60m

who cares? pay him what he wants. He won 2 titles and played in more.

Napier signed in 2021 for 7 years $52M
Huepel signed in 2021 for 6 years $24M
Moore signed in 2024 for 5 years $30M
Elko signed in 2023 for 6 years, $42M
Venables signed in 2021 for 6 years $44M

Think about what you’re saying.

Let’s pick a name at random with a comparable buyout. Dan Lanning has a $56 million buyout compared to Kelly’s $53 million. That buyout came from a 6-year extension that Lanning just signed this year.

If Dan Lanning’s buyout is still $50+ million, 4 years from now, what does that mean? It means he’s either been extended again or he’s been hired somewhere else. Which means he’s had continued success.

One thing we can say with certainty is that 4 years from now, nobody on that list except for Kirby Smart and possibly Ryan Day will have a $50 million+ buyout on a 4-year-old contract.

Sure.. if your point is that it’s one of the worst contracts in CFB, you’re right.

None of those guys left a school with the standing of Notre Dame and none of them had the career that Brian Kelly had when hired.

Whether or not a fully guaranteed 10 year deal is a good idea (it isn't), they aren't directly comparable hires.

It takes more to get the winningest active coach away from a historical power than it does to get a career DC to take a high profile gig like Oklahoma.

the standing of Notre Dame

that's fueled by the media, almost everyone who's coached there says they are notoriously cheap and tight with the purse strings, even the biggest ND homer of them all, Lou Holtz

Fisher’s original TAMU contract was 10 years at 75M guaranteed.
He was 4 years in on it. The remaining 45 was on him.
54+45 =99M in just those 2. That fat bastard cost those schools north of 150 if you added up other coaches.

If Jimbo doesn't get that extension and raise, but still get fired the exact same day, his buyout would have been around $25 mil at time of firing.

Ross Bjork's extension and raise TRIPLED what A&M actually ended up owing him.

no, Standard protocol is to match what the coaching market dictates that particular hiring cycle.
Both new hires and extension/raises around the rest of the country help set that market.

in 2021:

James Franklin - (extension and raise) 10 years ; $85 mil
Mel Tucker - (extension and raise) 10 years ; $95 mil
Jimbo Fisher - (extension and raise) 10 years ; $95 mil
Lincoln Riley - 10 years ; $110 mil
Mario Cristobal - 10 years ; $80 mil
Kirby Smart - (extension and raise) 10 years ; $112 million
Dabo Swinney - (extension and raise) 10 years ; $115 million

quote:

Napier signed in 2021 for 7 years $52M
Huepel signed in 2021 for 6 years $24M
Moore signed in 2024 for 5 years $30M
Venables signed in 2021 for 6 years $44M

every one of these were signing their first ever Power 4 Head coaching contract.
and 3 of them were signing their first ever HC gig at any level in college.

in 2021 cycle, only 4 guys left one Power 4 school for another Power 4 school.

Kelly, Riley, Cristobal and Elko

3 of those 4 signed deals for 10 years and worth $80 mil or above.
Kelly's deal fell right in the middle of them.

Because that's where the market was in 2021
