Again like the home stealing try on Saturday…when I watched pick off out it looks like only catcher and 1b knew what was up. Hate to admit but it was pretty good set up. 1b guy was 3 steps toward 2b when he broke to bag and throw was perfect.
Some of that play was on Coach Wanaka( who’s awesome) got caught watching hitter.

100% of that play was on the 1B coach. He's the only one who can see the first baseman.

Reminded me when Jobert got picked off at first by the catcher in game 1 of the Arkansas series last year when LSU finally had momentum.

Well, the catcher and first baseman said after the game that the pickoff play was entirely between the two of them, so figuring it out the day after the game is pretty easy. Milam just got caught.

My thought as well.

Give UTenn credit. They saw the chance and executed it.

Not gonna lie, it was beautiful (I love defense) but painful as an LSU fan to watch. Catcher threw a seed on a dime and 1B snapped that tag quick and short. It was textbook. Perfect footwork, too. Being LH helped that play a lot.

With all the computer electronics all 1st base coach has to do is a search of snap throw by catcher. 1st base coach is there to guide player and help players. Yes Milam screwed up but Wannabe should have known the catcher was able to make that throw on a dime. I was very impressed by the catcher throw on his knees. Not that many catchers except MLB guys could make that throw. Wannabe has to know that in his scouting report. He had the know the strength of the right fielders arm and catchers arm. He failed. Milian is a freshman and probably never saw a catcher's arm like that in High School. He will grow and learn but what was Wannabe excuse. He had no room to improve. It's why you see on college and high school head coaches coach third. No excuse what so ever on Wannabe

Did he?
He appeared to make it to me - dirt in the way.
Had he been ruled safe it would not have been overturned

High risk play by Tenn. it paid off for them. Any small mistake in the process would have cost them at least one run but they ran it perfect.

I don’t see them risking that play when something big is on the like like a regional, super or Omaha.

Hats off to the execution though, no doubt.

I see why the runner to such a long lead to try to get to third on a base hit, but it's two outs and you aint going anywhere because the bases are loaded. Totally on the 1lb coach and a little on HC. Don't make the last out on the bases, this is a HS teachable moment.

A coach would probably not a call that in that situation.

There is just a good of a chance the ball ends up in right field and two runs score.

I’ve been hard on Wanaka for this, but I’d like to see the play again.

It seems I’m thinking now that the Tennessee first baseman broke before the pitch cross the plate, vacating his spot. In my opinion, that gives a little bit of an out for Wanaka.

Also, I like to see if Milam was just out that far or if he was out that far at the end of a secondary.

Milam Has to learn You always give one or two hard steps back to the bag if a ball is not put in play specifically just to let the catcher know you’re on him. That is routine. Anytime you’re on first but locked in by a runner at second and they’re not holding you on. Always have to break hard back to first first a step or two.

The play was so close, I’m hoping Milam had already broken a step back.

Regardless of all this, tip of the cap to the two Tennessee guys cause they did it perfect.

Please describe all the attributes that make him “awesome” as a first base coach. These guys have been picked off on several occasions.

The only reason why they ran that play is because they saw how far off first Milam was getting on the first pitch. He should have never been that far off. They wouldn’t even have called the play had he been closer. I can’t think of one reason he should have been that far off first with bases loaded and 2 outs. No need to be that aggressive in that situation. The pitcher has got to throw some decent pitches with bases loaded.

It was a great defensive play. Back pick timing play. Hate it for Milam but it took some stones to call that play in that situation. Lot of things could have gone wrong for UT.

Milam being that far off was absolutely fine considering where the first basement was playing.

Not really.

Under normal circumstances, you have to beat the throw.

He obviously couldn't beat the throw from there...so he had to make sure he could beat the 1B back to the bag. And, as we saw, if the first baseman gets the first step or two on him he wouldn't beat him back.
