I’m not sure any of this is necessarily permanent except Weeks. I think South Carolina’s offense is dictating some of this with their big, running QB (who’s been sacked like 7 times) who is young and not very accurate. And they have a bad OL and not great playmakers at WR. I think Baker’s gonna get after his arse and confuse the shite out of him with pressure from all over, dropping dudes back in coverage, and just baiting him into big sacks and bad picks.
But this gamelan isn’t gonna work against Ole Miss. Baker may be moving Perk around all season, and I think Spears has to wind up starting at one of the safety spots. He’s tall and he’s a playmaker. I was looking at his high school stats and he made a ton of picks. It’s the SEC and not high school, but Sage has all of zero in 4 years. You’d think he’d’ve fricked up and had 1 stick in his face mask or something by now. But they trust him to at least be in the right place right now, and that’s got value.
Hot take—they are moving Shand inside to make room for Reliford to start getting more reps in the 2 deep. He’s already a stud and is gonna be hard to keep off the field. Not that they’re kicking Shand down just to make room for Gabe, but they feel comfortable that he can hold it down behind Jones.

Hopefully Baker knows what a QB spy is unlike House a la Jalen Milroe last year

Since 2022, we’ve been trotting out the same LB’s except for Whit. Thats VERY concerning that we have no one ready from high school to at least step up.
I just know we have to have someone on the sideline that can play, cmon..not 1 person from our recruiting classes? We’re missing big time

Was it that House didn’t use a spy, or was it that we didn’t have a single player on the roster good enough to spy Jalen Milroe?

I really think Matt House fricked up our LBs. Somehow he turned an all PAC12 linebacker into complete arse in one year. And that same guy just made an NFL 53 man roster. Matt House is the answer

Yep, I’m sure the issue is they see what he could be potentially in the role they envisioned but we also need some big plays and things he can do elsewhere. Essentially he’s a super talented, underdeveloped player who has a unique ability.

they also just can’t abandon an idea the second it hits a bump.
I think this is it. You see something in a kid and it plays at practice or you think there’s potential if it would just click so you keep trying to push it until you hit the “you know what, eff it we can’t keep doing this” point

yeah the issue is there aren’t true Will linebackers anymore.
we have 2 ILB and a OPB who is. standing DE who sometimes drops in coverage but is on the line and rushes 90% of the time.
I think we send him down the LB path because we thought we could move him all over and blitz him and he has the speed to play sideline to sideline
but he just hasn’t adapted to the traffi. you see at that position.
he’s too small to be the DE/OL. hybrid every down.
I said a while back, if you had a guy come in who was 6’2” 210 super fast and super athletic where would you put him?
And the answer i had was safety.
but House didn’t use safeties like we used Jamal Adams back in the day so he ended up at ILB.
and then OLB but again we let offenses dictate where he played and he was out in coverage too often.

LSU defensive moves recommended by tRant for the last year and a half. I don't know if I should be happy or scared. All these things seemed so obvious.
They’re not always so “obvious” to the staff because they’re working with more complete information. : such as the rumor that Perkins’ camp wanted him the learn and play MLB. You also have to consider that this is a new defensive coaching staff. So, it’s not “15” games in, it’s 2-3. Be grateful that we now have a defensive coach that is trying to fix the issues. He gave it 2 games to try to name it work. Now he’s making changes.

Was this announced or still just wishing?

The rant is officially coaching defense.

Are we sure Perkins is going to the Star position or are we just playing 3 LB sets bc of the SC personel. Kelly mentioned this in his presser. Never heard him say Perkins to Star.

Even more than that, you might have a kid that does everything right and understands how to run every drill, has a great IQ in film and is a leader, then just can’t get right on Saturdays.
Last year Whit did a podcast and talked about how high of a football IQ Speights had and how he knew the plays before they happened. People talked all camp about how great he was and he legitimately couldn’t do anything right on game days.

You’re correct but in that hypbrid style D we play the Star is a lot like what you’re talking about. Almost like the old box safety/Tampa 2 WLB Hybrid position. Frank Beamer used to have a position like it in his defenses but I forgot what he called it.

just need to bench sage and burns and put in the freshman... dashawn is gonna be a good one... We need massive DTs... like the 330lb kind... DEs should be 285 ish like savion.... those are the guys that will stop the run... we just need beef there... tyler shelvin guys... need about 4 of them every year...

I’m surprised it has taken all of fall practice and two games into the season for the coaches to make this change. I still support this staff but taking this much time to figure out Weeks needed be on the field is a little concerning.
Agreed.
He was noticeably better almost immediately when he play last season. I think BK has put a premium on experience and guys knowing where to be over physical ability. That's great and all, but if a guy knows where to be but physically can't make the play does it really matter that he's in the right spot? Hell, it took until the second quarter of the Ole Miss game in 2022...the 8th game of the season...for Perkins to become a consistent part of the defense. We all saw it, but the staff just wouldn't fully commit to a true freshman. That game was looking like an Ole Miss blowout until Perkins, by Lane Kiffin's own admission, completely changed the game.
The ONLY reason I'll give the staff a little pit of a pass is because in the first two games they were hoping Perkins could be impactful as a three down ILB and didn't want to take him off the field to make a spot for Weeks. After watching Nicholls manhandle him with runs up the gut I think they have finally accepted Perkins isn't a ILB.
