The SEC saw this tactic work in the Sorsby matter. However, this is NOT the Sorsby case. There, it was universally agreed that gambling on games involving your own team was an automatic disqualifier. Something that has been the case for decades throughout many different sports.

Here, we have an eligibility dispute. Just one of several over the last few years. Countless times courts have ruled against/enjoined the NCAA from enforcing whatever rule was in place to render a player ineligible. The fact that for decades the NCAA was so arbitrary and ambiguous about how it enforced its eligibly rules was part of the reason why the players were always winning in the first place. Now you have a conferences openly and retroactively colluding to exclude a specific set of players out of the marketplace. It doesn't take a big leap in logic to suggest that is anticompetitive action by monopolistic bodies (the NCAA and major conferences, particularly the SEC and Big 10, have a monopoly over the now very lucrative football and basketball marketplace). In doing so, I think the SEC is running the risk of having some bad litigation essentially ending with the breakup of the SEC down the road.

EDT: That litigation won't be instituted by the schools. It will be the players who do so.
