Great point. I wish like hell that we could be a big 2 sport school like that.

If we go 10-6 in league, do yall think the PMAC will still be packed at the end? I really don't know.
When was the last time Florida packed their arena with a 10-6 SEC record following back to back losing seasons?

The fact we don't have the attendance/support that teams like Texas and Florida do is a function of winning versus losing, not the other way around.

If LSU wins back to back National Titles in Basketball and we still can't get people to come to the games, then you will have a point. Otherwise, you are simply missing it.

Neither lack of fan interest/support nor being a "football school" are responsible for the difference between LSU's basketball program and Florida's basketball program. The difference exists because of the difference between Billy Donovan and John Brady.

If Trent Johnson is a Billy Donovan-caliber coach, we will have championship caliber teams playing before wild packed crowds on a regular basis.

Why can it not be like Florida at Texas and have loyal fan support for football and basketball and compete on the highest level of each? Do fans not want this? Can't we be great at the two most popular sports in collegiate athletics? Will LSU fans ever care enough to get basketball to that level or are they content?

I won't. Basketball simply isn't as interesting as football...not to me anyway. I always look on the start of basketball season with dread because it signals that football season is almost over.

I frankly couln't care less whether the basketball team does well. I mean...it's nice when they do, but I don't lose sleep over whether they don't do well. For the life of me, I couldn't name a single player right now or tell you the team's record or standings.

Duke is a basketball school.
UNC is a basketball school.
Kentucky is a basketball school.
Indiana is a basketball school.
UCLA is a basketball school.

Florida and Texas are football schools who have recent success in basketball.

You honestly do not think LSU is not a two sport school. Baseball is a very big sport at LSU our fan support and baseball stadium is incredible compared to other schools. The problem with baseball and basketball is there is too many games played. Very few teams have full stadiums for every game and most of those have basketball being the dominate sport or x-large student bases.

Numbers are a big part of it too.

UF 51,143 students
UT 50,006 students

LSU 32,000 students

Basketball has games all during the week and you do not think having roughly 20,000 more students and a lot more staff helps.

We had season tickets during the Chris Jackson & Shaq years...the PMAC was awesome! I don't think LSU is necessarily a football school & I think that olla is not representative of most Tiger fans. The problem is many LSU fans, myself included, found Brady so offensive in the way he was always whining or blaming the fans for his own inadequacies, that many of the former LSU fans just got out of the habit of attending the games. Add that to several years of mediocrity...& you've got a fanbase that no longer turns out for games. Now, however, I think the fans respect Coach Johnson and are beginning to notice that the team is well-coached and disciplined and can be exciting...it might take time, but I think the fans will return, particularly, if Coach J can recruit successfully. Attendance in basketball like all sports is generally based on the level of success of the teams playing.

The program has been too inconsistent to put us on the level of Florida and Texas. Our hoops program doesn't have an identity right now.

I agree. The fans arent the reason LSU isnt at that level

If the team wins, the fans will follow. That is how it is in any sport

Successful basketball teams do not equal a "basketball school." Make no mistake, Florida and Texas are absolutely, 100% football schools. They have been fortunate/wise/whatever enough to also field very successful basketball teams, which has made those teams very popular with the fan base. But 99.999% of those fans at the Gator and Longhorn Basketball games would drop those programs in a heartbeat to save their football teams. As would their administrations.

Yep

you're missing the point of the whole topic. basketball is cared about and respected in each of those fan bases.

If LSU reached their level, they'd have the same fan base, and if UF or UT drops, they'll have a similar fanbase (maybe not quite as bad) that LSU's had the past year or two.

Plus those schools have enrollments near 50,000 each. Add that to the alumni base, you have a lot of BB fans.

True dat. Although I grew up in BR I'm a Texas alum. With a student base like that UT could fill their natatorium - which itself was a world-class facility. I swam there a couple of times, it's phenomenal.

The Lady Longhorns (basketball) didn't have to give away tickets to pack the Erwen Center. The years I was there (mid-80's) they generally outsold the men at full price. Those, of course, are the minor programs, you can bet football has had top facilities too.

No doubt our hoops team/program could stand some improvement and so far I'm impressed with Coach Trent. We've won more national championships than either UT or UF so I think our overall athletic program is doing well.

We don't lose to TX very often in basketball anyway.

They weren't top flight in basketball either for a long time.

1989
The Longhorns make it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade and stun Georgia Tech.

2003
Texas makes the NCAA tournament Final Four for the first time in 56 years.

I think we are the only school who can really claim to be both a basketball and football school. Obviously, Florida will be always be football first, but we are as close as anybody can possibly be. After all, of the last 6 football/basketball championships, we have won 4 of them. Our basketball coach also makes more than our football coach.

Give Trent Johnson six or eight years and the PMAC will be packed night in and night out. But yes it might take that long. Hopefully he can get it going sooner, but we lose the nucleus of this team, and it will take some time to rebuild. But we finally have us a basketball coach!!

Might I also add:

LSU strength of schedule: 304 / top 50 teams played: 2
Texas strength of schedule: 37 / top 50 teams played: 7
Florida strength of schedule: 197 / top 50 teams played: 3
