With The Swamp & O'Dome next to each other and plenty of open space between them, we really should create a unified public space that honors the football and basketball greats. We already have a start with the Heisman statues. Plenty of space on the basketball side to do something to honor the '04's or something to that effect.
Hell - they could expand it to all sports and create a champions plaza. Plenty of people worthy of that kind of recognition around UF athletics.

I could be wrong, but I don’t ever recall this. Can you link the information please
The UF President has pretty broad power over the UAA, especially the budget since they have final signoff and get line item authority.
Here is one example from back in the mid-2000's with Machen:
quote:
According to the Gainsville Sun, The University of Florida (UF) has asked its University Athletic Association (UAA) to make $6 million is cuts, to be returned to the university’s budget. UF President Bernie Machen said, “They ought to take the same cut as everybody else.”
UF was forced to go through state budget cuts. Machen hated the optics of the UAA carrying a profit at the same time so he directed millions back to the university to cover costs. Right when football and basketball were at their peak, he was forcing the athletic department to hand over money.

. It will be lucky to break even. Imagine the roster we could have with that money. I do enjoy basketball but man feels like a bad decision to spend that much on Basketball.
Basketball is a bit of an outlier this season because of the unique nature of all of these top guys returning, but this is also what the people giving us the resources want. UF basketball is a proven commodity and they went all in. Very real chance to pull in a 4th national title.

UF hasn't taken money away from football, we have just been historically cheap, even when we didn't need to be, and were giving millions back to the university year after year. That is a Jeremy Foley thing.
Agree with the sentiment of the post with one exception. Giving money back to the school wasn't a Foley thing, it was an order from the UF President.

UF’s spending on non-revenue sports is in line with other SEC schools. We’re not doing anything crazy in these sports, just easier for us to recruit.

Florida's success in the Directors Cup is honestly mostly the result of location. Much easier to attract talent in the non-revenue sports when you're the flagship school in a state with a massive talent pool. It's not a coincidence the school sports programs started taking off in the 90's with the demographic changes in Florida during that time.

Cool story. It's just that 2008 seems a little further off in my football world.
Yeah, we've sucked for a minute. Has nothing to do with a successful basketball program.

Florida has always been willing to rob Peter to pay Paul. Peter being football.
Idk, I think Florida has proven we can be quite successful in both at the same time. It isn't necessary for one program to suffer for the other to win.

I doubt it. Football is still king and Golden will likely get the NBA itch.
UF has pretty well established itself as a national power in basketball. May not be Duke, but will continue to be a force well into the future with the resources committed to it.

As in John Calipari? Not sure how he’d even be on the list, certainly not over Billy Donovan.

The only thing that is even different is a blue helmet for some games. Is that really that big of a deal?

It's a good argument to have, but Bama also has played more post season ranked teams than everyone. A re-ranking of only regular season ranked teams on everyone's schedule would reveal a different story. They played 3 post season games against ranked teams just last season which is basically the difference that puts them at the most ranked teams played. They just passed Notre Dame last season.
Guessing that probably puts UF at the top considering we've done nothing in the postseason in forever

Nah we dont have to bring in more football powerhouses. We can diversify and adding UNC would be the way to go.
UNC is a great program for basketball and baseball and a pretty nice candidate for the athletic director's cup. The school also has historical relevance and a premier state school. The SEC would love to have UNC.
Yeah, I think expanding into North Carolina makes a ton of sense. If we could get UNC, that is a no brainer to me.

The only thing that is unique about this is the option to use the blue helmet. Other than that, this is nothing more than different combinations of the standard uniform. The same variations that have been worn for decades, I'm not seeing the big deal. :dunno:
re: Florida returning legend Denzel Aberdeen has been granted a 5th year of eligibility
Posted by bgator85 on 8/1/26 at 7:50 am to Lt. Columbo
Should have been eligible after the 5 for 5 ruling. NCAA was stupid to just not include this group into the decision. Everyone before this senior class got the extra Covid year. Everyone after them got to benefit from the new rule. Was a common sense resolution to this eligibility question.
re: WTF Florida? Sumrall is taking up Lanes headline grabbing slack.

Definitely in the summer doldrums. Not sure how this is newsworthy. Let alone how this makes someone a freak

Also agree he was busy giving millions back to the university rather than keeping up with the facilities race.
Don't want to get to into the weeds on this, but these decisions aren't really made by him.
The AD is the face of the department and has hiring responsibility, but the school president controls the purse strings. They ultimately decide what goes back to the school. How much can be spent on facilities.
Machen hated the optics of athletic spending while we were trying to improve our academic rankings. A lot of ideas died at his desk.

Did you just say Foley was a bad AD? You are fricking beyond stupid. Clearly, very, very clearly not a Gator.
Yeah, no AD is ever going to be perfect, but the proof is in the trophy case. Might not like every decision he made, but clearly one of the best to ever do it. He was also all Gator and obsessed with winning. Not a coincidence his era was also one greatest runs in athletic department history. I'm honestly curious who could even compete with it.

Florida being ranked pretty low among SEC teams jumped off the page.
Curious what ranking you saw. Florida won the SEC All Sports trophy and finished 2nd among SEC schools in the national directors cup at 6th nationally. 42 consecutive top 10 finishes in the Directors Cup, only school to never fall outside the top 10 since the standings began.
I think there is a pretty strong argument UF is the most consistent, well rounded athletic program. Especially if talking last 30 years or so. 77% of our sponsored sports have won at least 1 national title. 270 SEC titles, far more than any other program.

The Swamp is honestly overrated as hell. It's not that loud.
That's just not true. I've been to every stadium in conference except Texas & OU. Go to at least 2 per year.
UF is consistently one of the loudest environments without question. Even during down years been showing out lately. There is a lot of things we can get shite on for, having a loud stadium is definitely not one of them.
For Florida:
1. Renovation of The Swamp is primary focus. And taking a huge chunk of any funds available with the $1.45B price tag.
LINK
2. The football stadium currently houses admin offices and the non-revenue sports weight room. To compensate, there is a $30M renovation/expansion of the Lemerand Athletics Center.
3. Basketball practice facility renovation. Scope and price tag are still up in the air. After the national title, they went back to the drawing board to do something a little more significant than initial plans
