Why can it not be like Florida at Texas and have loyal fan support for football and basketball and compete on the highest level of each? Do fans not want this? Can't we be great at the two most popular sports in collegiate athletics? Will LSU fans ever care enough to get basketball to that level or are they content?

Shoe', I've been saying this forever. And in Texas case, you can add in a baseball team with possibly more of an illustrious history than LSU, a women's basketball team who has been dominant for years, and solid track and field. LSU is on the cusp of that, but the fans don't seem to gravitate to basketball. I don't know why. It's all about the money. The more fans go, the more money the program makes, the more money that the program can spend on making the image even better.

Let me know as soon as LSU is willing to pay a basketball coach 3 mil a year and we can have a talk about this.

When your football coach makes almost 4 mil a year and your basketball coach barely makes over 1 mil a year, YOU ARE A FOOTBALL SCHOOL.

Florida pays both Meyer and Donovan almost 4 mil. Actually I think Meyer is over 4 mil now.

We need to be happy with the success we have had as a football school. But that IS what we are. Let's not talk crazy.

if johnson wins back to back nc games like Donovan did he might be closer to miles in salary.

Barnes makes over 2 mil and T Boone Pickens offered Self almost 4 mil to come to Okie State, so you know Kansas upped him at least close to that to stay.

As of this date, Meyer still makes about $500,000 less than Donovan. Donovan has been at UF longer, and has played in 3 title games since 2000, although Meyer will likely pass him when contract negotiations come up after signing day.

Florida and Texas are football schools who have recent success in basketball.

I agree, FL and UT are football first and everything else second, even if they are winning championships in the other sports.

Notice how most of the schools regarded as "basketball schools" typcially are either mediocre or plain terrible in the area of football. The distinction in many cases comes from the lack of a great football program.

Football has more wide spread popularity vs. basketball so the distinction is made in the absence of an elite football program.

Why can't we be a soccer school?

Football is king in Louisiana.

Why do certain LSU "fans" insist on eating glass & stabbing themselves each day in their self-hatred???

Basketball attendence is a little different than football game attendence. People come from all over the state and the country to see football games. Basketball and baseball games are mostly attended by the local populous and students.

Not to get into the playoff debate, but he's right. Single basketball games are just not as meaningul. The ones that are, are in tournament time, either conference or NCAA. Sure there are big games in basketball but there will never be one singular game played at the PMAC that will impact the season the way an AUburn, Florida or Bama game would.

Even if we played say, Florida for the SEC regular season championship, what does it really matter? Both would be in the NCAA anyway and would still have to go through the SEC tourney.

Also, in the case of basketball and espescially baseball; the college game does not always attract the best of the best and is not a feeder to the professional game the way football is.

We can support the the team and I hope we do, I hope the PMAC and Alex Box are sold out every time, but it's impossible to compare basketball and football.

I don't want to sound like a liberal, but I think it mostly boils down to cultural differences. In the Northeast people just are not that big into foobtball as they are in the rest of the country. How many I-A schools are there in that region excluding Army (which I don't consider to be representative of the region)?

If you go from Maine to basically Phili you have Buffalo, Syracuse, UConn (new), BC, Rutgers and Temple. That's a huge amount of people in those states.

Also private schools like Duke, Marquette, St. John's, St. Joes, Seton Hall, Xavier, Georgetown, Davidson, Butler are small where it would likely be more than they can chew to play big time foobtall.

In the case of UNC, Kanasas, Kentucky, UCLA -- yeah they just suck at football.

For a 15 year period from 1978 to 1993 The LSU BB fan base was rocking. Attended many sold-out games and the average attendance was better than 80% capacity during those years. The football program had it's moments during that time frame, 2 sec championships, numerous bowl games but not the level we're at now. It would be wonderful for both to be gangbusters together. As recently as '05-'06 was terrific when both excelled. High-level consistancy from both would set BR and the state on fire. And don't forget it looks like baseball is back. Looking forward to it all.

Donovan's contract is for $3.75 million, while Meyer's is $3.25 million. It could very well change soon though.

you act as if its fans intentionally trying to hold the program back. I'm sure donovan and barnes didn't just show up on those campuses and people started packing the house from day one. Give it some time

LSU fans have been dying for a consistent basketball program. Hopefully, we have the guy that will give us one.
