First we need to figure out if he is a weekend starter. If he is bullpen or closer the door for being a two-way player gets a lot wider. I still don't think it will be at catcher though. I think he will maximize his arm pitching and the rest of the time he will be in the batting cage.

I just don't think it will be at catcher.
As it stands he’ll be a weekend starter and DH.
ETA: Scanning some of their box scores from last season it looks like he missed several weeks with an injury which probably impacted some of his aggregate offensive numbers, and when he returned he didn’t hit in the games he was the SP like he did early in the season.

Guidry wants to close and Jay may try him there first. Skenes is a starter.

I'm curious where you get that from. It could be accurate but I'm just not sure how you get that. At 6'6" and slow, usually doesn't translate into a stud defensive catcher. Have you read something that talks about his defensive skills as a catcher (not sarcasm)? Hey, I could be wrong.
Regardless, like you said, catching isn't probably the plan at LSU. That was my original point.

Skenes obviously did his research when choosing a school. I'm sure he feels he can start here and I think that is the plan.
That being said, I'm sure Floyd, Taylor, Lansville, Little, Hurd, Shores, Noot and probably some others want to start as well.
The only thing I heard on Skenes is mid 90's fastball and a good slider. I'm assuming he has some really good tools for Wes to work with and probably hasn't reached his potential yet.
That is why I am saying Skenes should primarily focus on his pitching. There is nothing wrong with a few at bats when resting his arm but I wouldn't do anything that takes away from progressing as a pitcher. Being a weekend starter should be his primary focus.
Now if he doesn't win a starting role, it's a lot different. There could be more than one closer on a team as you know. Not to mention Jay likes a guy he can bring in the 7th to shut things down. If that happens, I think being a two-way player becomes more important to him and the team and more of a focus.

Skenes is the most proven starting pitcher on the staff now. I’ll be shocked if he’s not starting on Friday or Saturday.
Having said that, in the Wes Johnson interview earlier this week on Moscona he described what he looks for in a starter. First, has to be a consistent strike thrower with at least 2 pitches he can throw consistently for strikes. If I recall, he threw out that he wants his starters to be able to throw their secondary pitch for strikes at least 60% of the time.
The staff is going to be sick. I know we are all excited about the new arrivals, but I think you will see some of the current guys improve under Wes. With his arm strengthening program LSU is gonna have around 7-8 guys that can hit at least 95 mph.
Just off the top of my head.
Skenes
Little
Hurd
Floyd
Taylor
Money
Shores
Noot (if he sticks)
Even Guidry, Moffett, and Bucknham may pick up enough velo to be in that club by spring.
Gonna be fun!

I dont think we got him here without basically guaranteeing him a spot as a weekend starter

Im wondering if there is room for money

Gonna be interesting. Will have to see if he ups his game under Wes.

Q from a guy who don't know a lot about baseball: Are we to the point with these "young" arms where pitching becomes a planned tag team? A Skenes or Hurd or Little starts & get 15 or so outs & then a Taylor, Dutton, etc. comes in as scheduled for that day & gets 8 or 9 outs then the closer(s) finishes up? Thus instead of the emphasis on who "starts" it becomes the Friday team of Skenes/Dutton, the Saturday team of Hurd/Taylor, etc. That way you are saving those arms for post season, getting more guys "scheduled" for the weekends & developing quality depth.

I could see tandem starts every once in a while, but I don't think we see it scheduled for Fridays and maybe not every single week.
But we now have Floyd, Taylor, Skenes, Hurd, and Little as weekend starter candidates (and I'm probably missing someone). If the plan is bat Skenes, functionally he would need to start on Friday or Sunday. If Hurd is back to form, he's the Friday guy.
If Floyd has continued to progress, that puts him on Saturday with Little and Taylor on the outside looking in. Taylor could slide to the back end of the bullpen and Little could be the long guy to take over for anyone that scuffles.
And then we have a frickton of other arms to fill in and mix and match.

Our pitching talent and depth has been greatly improved. I am looking forward to seeing how Coach Wes Johnson manages and develops our new and returning pitchers.

I could see that early in the season and see who can handle going through the order multiple times the best. As you get further into the season I would much rather let the starter go as far as he can. We saw how crucial that seems to be this season without having that.

Top,
Didn’t remotely insinuate that. I had been told by a very good source to keep a close eye on LSU on that one, then a more reliable source reached out to give me more, hence the deleted tweet. Given my constant communication with the staff, I get the feeling they didn’t take it that way either.
On the second, what I implied is that both teams are loaded going into 2023, which is accurate. They will return seven of their top nine hitters, most of their arms, and also did well in the portal and got every signee to campus. HS class wise LSU’s far superior depth wise.

In life and baseball, nobody bats 1.000. Appreciate your work man!

It’s almost like we get to catch up to the Vandys and Floridas of the world when it comes to pitching staffs. Refreshing.

Skenes did not play any in the field while on team USA this summer. Neither in the intra-squad or real games.
As a starter:
3.2IP 2H 0 ER 4K vs USA Stripes
4IP 2H 0ER 1BB 4K vs Netherlands

Thanks for the reply. If I took it wrong then I apologize. It seemed like you were implying there were shady tactics at play. My apologies if that’s not what you were saying.
Glad you’re here as we are about to begin the return of LSU’s national dominance. Will certainly enjoy your input as Coach Johnson continues to build a monster.
As I’m sure you know, he’s been an absolute stud on the recruiting trail going back to his assistant coaching days at the University of San Diego.
Definitely good days ahead for our program and we are glad you’re here to share the experience!
