Eh. If he’s not getting opportunities in OOC with two hurt starters and another starter who can’t sniff Mendoza, I can’t blame him for reading the writing on the wall and not expecting to get opportunities when SEC comes around and people start coming back healthy.

He did not. He told a player that other players were ahead of him on the depth chart and that player then decided to go elsewhere instead of fighting to get better at LSU.

I told him if he was going to put all his eggs in one basket with baseball, I didn’t know how that was going to work out for him because he was so far behind so many guys in our program

What part of the above statement is positive in any way about his future here? I don’t know any kid that would stay after you tell them that. Regardless of his intentions, it’s not rocket science what would happen.

I don’t blame Hampton for transferring. I just think it’s dumb to say Mainieri is wrong with being upfront with Hampton about where he falls in the pecking order right now. Or should he have lied to him instead just to convince him to stay longer? Once Gio is healthy, who exactly should he be playing in front of? As an outsider, I agree he should have gotten more looks in OOC/midweek games, but he wouldn’t be playing ahead of Dugas, Gio, or Crews once SEC play started so maybe it’s for the best that Hampton transfer somewhere he can play

Being honest is sometimes telling people things they may not want to hear.

Maybe Mainieri wants what’s best for him. That may not be riding the bench at LSU

He basically did say that. He didn't say it was for a lack of talent. But that he was NOT GOING TO BE GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY. It was going to be a while for him to get an opportunity. With that said I don't blame him. I wouldn't sit around for a 70 yr old man to DECIDE whe he wanted to give me an opportunity. To that I say good luck and frick PM

I also remember PM and Hampton talking to the media before the season started last year. They wanted to talk almost exclusively about Hampton. PM said he had a lot of talent but was raw and he had to earn a spot just like anyone else. Hampton also said he had to earn a spot because the media was questioning him as if it was a foregone conclusion that he was the next big star and going to start from day 1.

Is this a nice way of saying “you’re not getting a scholarship if you’re not playing football?”

This kid better not blow up
Somewhere else.

Imagine the blowback if Hampton stayed and then started tweeting out that PM lied to him about where he was at on the roster.

Or you could take it as motivation to work extremely hard like a man and not give up

Bianco started day 1 last year. He went on to hit 0.074.

Wes Toups was also getting a look in LF. But Hampton got his chance and was hitting 0.291 before he hurt his back and his average fell. Toups is gone and a Bianco is still a shite batter so Mo’s competition was Dugas, Drost, and Sanford for that LF spot with Dugas getting the first look while PM was sorting out the infield.

He basically told the kid he didn’t have a place at LSU on the baseball team...a first round MLB talent. It’s so absurdly stupid

I think a “first round mlb talent” could work his way into the lineup....pawl does a lot of questionable things but benching “first round mlb talent” isn’t one of em
