Knowledgeable basketball people know that Dale wasn't a great coach. He was a great recruiter because he paid players just like Will. Dale was a great motivator just as was said at half time yesterday.

Bobby Knight knew the truth:

“It didn’t look good,” Knight said. “In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance.”

Indiana won, 77-76.

Add Knight: Of Brown’s coaching, he said: “To paraphrase Churchill, probably never has so little been done with so much.”

Will Wade has forgotten more about coaching than Brown ever thought he knew!

Ron Abernathy’s name should be planted on the same court Dale Brown’s name is on…he did more coaching than Dale himself.. he slept outside Rudy Macklin’s house in his car to get Rudy to come to LSU… he’s just as much a star in my book..

Stop lying dumbass… he took us to more than 10 Consecutively not just 10

quote:

Brown is the only SEC coach to have ever appeared in 15 straight national tournaments and only 11 coaches in NCAA history have made more consecutive NCAA appearances (10). Only the legendary Adolph Rupp of Kentucky has won more games in SEC history. Brown and Rupp are the only SEC coaches that had 17 consecutive non-losing seasons. Only 4 coaches in the SEC have won more conference championships, Adolph Rupp, Joe Hall, Tubby Smith, and Billy Donovan. Only seven coaches in the SEC have led their teams to two Final Fours or more while coaching SEC teams. They are Dale Brown, John Calipari, Billy Donovan, Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino, Nolan Richardson, and Adolph Rupp.

You people are just ignorant and opine about what your dumbass dads and uncles said about Dale

Do you honestly think that if Will Wade had continued at LSU for another 15 years, he would have made at least 5 Sweet 16s? He would have far surpassed Dale, and probably not had his team shite the bed when they did manage to get to big games.

I think he may have, but he did not. No reason to dog Dale.

When Dale Brown took over, LSU had not been to an NCAA tournament in 20 years and had only ever been twice with Bob Petit. They had been to one NIT in that period and that was with Pistol Pete, his lone postseason appearance in the time he was at LSU.

The excitement around LSU basketball in the 1980s has yet to be duplicated. It was absolutely electric in the PMAC. If it was like that today, no one would be complaining about the PMAC - they would think it was an awesome basketball arena.

Really? I always thought him comparing the NCAA to a group that committed the atrocities that the Gestapo did under the Nazi regime to be irresponsible and insulting to those whose lives were taken by that heinous regime.
It was an absolutely bad analogy in context, I would call it hyperbole. In the same light, calling out the NCAA at the time wasn't business as usual.

No, some of us just think it’s wild we fired Will Wade for cheating but we have the court named after a coach that got the program put on probation.

I thought Dale hired Rudy Macklin’s HS coach in order to sign Rudy.

I was a business associate of a guy who was friends with the owner of Ruth’s Chris in BR during Dale’s heyday. He told me LSU basketball players got about $250k per year in free meals. They bring their girls & families in there, order steaks, lobsters and 2 or 3 desserts.

Ironic he rolled himself out there vs Tennessee …… the opponent he was playing when he completely embarrassed himself and LSU “protecting” Shaq.

That should have been his last season. He embarrassed himself, the program, and exposed the inept leadership of the Athletic Dept.
If he had stepped down, a respectable qualified coach could have been hired to continue the gains he had made.
When he left, we were on probation. Brady did a remarkable job rebuilding the program, but the inept leaders gummed up the works once more. J & J

These threads pop up every once in a while and I always get a decent laugh. When Wade was hired, Brown loved the hire. There is a video of him online saying he thought Wade had it all and was an A+ hire. It wasn't until after Wade refused to talk to LSU officials (which Wade later admitted was bad advice from his first attorney that he fired) when I think things got a little strained in regards to Wade.

Whether you like Dale or not, he managed to bring LSU basketball to a level of consistency and excitement that we have been chasing ever since. I really liked what Wade did while he was here. For those saying Wade would have surpassed Dale's accomplishments as far as winning/tourney runs, it's possible he could have. However, he didn't last long at all. Managing to stick around a long time in college sports at one place is an accomplishment in itself. Like him or not, Brown's accomplishments and what he built at LSU were impressive and weren't easy to achieve.

If everyone was treated the same, WW could have a legacy here too. Just look at the posts pro and con. Dude was building it for us. That’s why I like Wade and always will. I love lsu basketball forever. I prefer when it doesn’t suck to be a fan.

Dale's teams were probably paying out more “NIL money“ than the current LSU team pays out.

John Williams got >150000
Every star BB player had a nice car.

There were coaches brought with players from high school and the coaches were paid ie funneled money to the players. I personally saw players riding around in cars in the 1980’s cashing checks for riding around in cars.

I heard from someone “associated with" the team that John Williams' mom got over $250,000 during the two years he was here. The guy told me that his mom was running her mouth in Los Angeles so much that they had to move her back to Baton Rouge just to keep her quiet. Apparently, UCLA had paid Williams and his mom a shite ton of money prior to his signing with LSU and their coach, Larry Farmer, was really pissed and was looking to hang up LSU anyway he could.

Keep in mind, that at that time, $100k could buy you a really nice house in Baton Rouge.

I also remember seeing Fess Irvin driving around campus in a brand new 300ZX with a license plate that read "Fess-4". A friend of mine knew him from high school and said that his mom was a teacher (or something like that) and there was no way she could ever afford a 300ZX. Although he didn’t pan out, Fess Irvin was one of the most highly rated point guards in the country in high school. He was highly recruited by all of the blue bloods.

Dale’s record was a great one. He came to LSU at the right time and he energized basketball. It didn’t happen over night, but step by step things improved to the point we were in the hunt for NCs.

Dale recruited some great talents, but never could put it all together. He drew from all over the country and the world. There was no one like him.

Over time Dale faded. He got in trouble with the NCAA. He stayed too long and let the program decline. When he eventually retired the program was in trouble with the NCAA and was about where it was when Dale was hired. Many never forgave him for all that.

How much influence did he maintain after he quit. Some accuse him of meddling. He has influential friends. Many believed he helped bring in Johnny Jones.

How much is he involved now? I doubt he is. He had the court named after him and still comes out to watch the games so it appears he still cares.

Dale has been a fascinating character throughout his stay in BR. He has made a difference on and off the court. He brought a lot of notoriety to LSU. He brought one if not the most well known sports personalities to BR in Shaq. Thanks to Dale we witnessed some great basketball and great talents to ever come to LSU.

To me it's not much different than folks who compare professional athletics to the slave trade.

Sorry, I can't let this one pass. Abernathy was Rudy Macklin's high school coach - that's how we got Rudy...Dale hired his coach. And Ron was a head coach after his years at LSU and you can look up how he did then.

I would argue another coach who Dale hired to get his star player (something Dale did 4 times for sure I can recall of the top of my head) - namely Rick Huckaby who dale got hired to help get Howard Carter here, was much more the coach who contributed to strategic success on the court than Abernathy.

Abernathy was loyal and a good recruiter - but let' not revise history or exaggerate relative contributions.

Deal Brown deftly hit his weaknesses. But he came in as a new name coach and made LSU basketball a national brand.
