So found the rule book - abandonment requires the runner to reach the next base safely, and since the guy from third never got home, I don’t see how he’d qualify. It is ultimately a judgment call though, and if he goes into the dugout it’s probably going to be called an out. Also, the abandonment rule clearly states the ball is still in play, so calling time wouldn’t have been the right call.
Similarly, the baseline is not established until a a legitimate tag attempt his made, so he didn’t run afoul of that rule.
Just a really weird play that I can’t seem to fault the umpires for this time around.

I always wonder why teams don't decline the intentional walk. I don't see the downside to making the opposing pitcher throw 4 balls.
