Now, I don't think he got 300k though. That's a little ridiculous IMO.
Let's say regular guy has 100 thousand in disposable cash. That would equate to him forking over 300 bucks. He wouldn't bat an eye.

“I’m still trying to figure out why the FBI is involved,” Barkley said on the FBI’s on going investigation into NCAA basketball, via Scott Gleeson of USA Today Sports. “Listen, I went to college in 1981. We cheated back then. We’re cheating now. They’re always cheating. The toothpaste is out of the tube. They said they gave that kid at Arizona [Deandre Ayton] $100,000. He was underpaid. There must’ve been closed bidding because I would’ve gave his [expletive] more.”
As an Arizona resident, Barkley has a particular interest in Arizona Wildcats forward Deandre Ayton. Arizona coach Sean Miller is allegedly caught on FBI wiretap discussing a $100,000 payout to secure the then recruit Ayton. Ayton is one of several players who were named in a Yahoo Sports report about the FBI’s investigation into NCAA basketballs pay-for-play scandal.

If Naz said he didn't get money, he didn't get money and if it can't be proven then as for as anyone is concerned, he didn't get money...
But I posted this because according to Barkley giving someone $100k isn't that much.

Should have paid him to stay...

The other stuff...look the optics are not good. But this. An assistant from another school, who probably wanted Reid too, says WW "told him" he was giving Reid $300K? Why the hell would he do that?

Watford and his dad had Wade/Penny in a bidding war
With the NCAA and LSU's BOS all up in and around Wade and anything he does? Will Wade couldn't get a simple traffic ticket right now without it making national headlines and he is supposedly in a bidding war for Watford? These people saying these things aren't just attacking the coaches, they are attacking the integrity of the family. Bama fans are the biggest liars and most sociopathic fans in sports.

Everyone knows how dirty college basketball is.
Will wade is on tape talking about players being paid to play. Now maybe he didn’t pay him. Maybe someone else did. Maybe Naz didn’t actually receive money- maybe it was his mother, or father, or ‘agent’, But players are for sale in college basketball and the money goes somewhere.
If naz came to LSU from New jersey, where there are lots of good basketball programs within 100 miles of his front door, and money was not involved then we live in a world of rainbows and pixie dust.
Give me a break!
College basketball is a cesspool. It’s corrupt. No one with any sense believes its not. It’s possible that football is just as bad.
Naz reid cost someone a lot of money to play for LSU
That said, I have absolutely no problem with kids getting paid to play a sport that rich folks will pay insane amounts to watch. It’s illegal but not immoral imo. Just don’t get caught!

Sure. He would admit to tax evasion if he took the money.

The only difference between football and basketball is that basketball has the shoe companies very much tied into the recruiting. Unlike football, most of the recruiting is done through the AAU coaches, organizers, handlers. AAU itself is simply just a grey market for HS talent. The shoe companies literally fund the teams. No one involved in AAU ball is simply doing it out of the "goodness of their hearts". There is money to be made there and the players/"coaches" know their market value. Did Reid receive some kind of payment on behalf of the LSU basketball program? The answer is almost assuredly yes. But so did essentially every top 150 player. That's just how basketball recruiting works. I don't care if you are Duke, Arizona, LSU, Alabama or DePaul, that's how you have to do it. The notion that there are only a "few" dirty coaches is a complete joke.
And frankly, the outrage of national pundits is completely hypocritical. Every year we have to listen to sob stories about how it is patently unfair that college players have to play for "free" while their coaches/schools make millions off of their efforts. Yet, when information emerges that these guys may have actually gotten paid a significant amount to play college basketball, the same crowd immediately begins pearl clutching lamenting that the sanctity of the college game has been harmed.
Aren't the players getting EXACTLY what you say they should be getting? Significant compensation for their skills.
The only real issue is (likely) tax fraud. I suspect the players (or whoever gets the money) isn't reporting it (or most of it) on their tax returns. It's likewise being funneled (likely fraudulently) through tax exempt entities to get to the players families. There are a LOT of churches in the hood that get significant "donations" from wealthy white businessmen. I wonder why?

quote:oh, I don't know, maybe he doesn't want to be the one who brings down the program.
Why would he lie?
Doesn't want to get his family, handlers, coaches, etc. in trouble.
Doesn't want to be labelled a cheater.
Doesn't want the NCAA to declare him ineligible (applies more to Smart, not Naz, since he's gone).
Doesn't want the IRS to start snooping, if he or his family failed to report the impermissible benefits as income.

What was he supposed to say? Yeah, we overpaid for him.
Posted on 5/17/19 at 9:49 am to Rosenblatt
Also, the mcdonald's aa game has been around for app. 45 years. LSU has signed 20-22 of those players over that period which is like 8th in the nation. And a fair amount of them are NOT from the boot. LSU has signed top guys for years in hoops.

I would say $100k for 1 year in college is vastly underpaid for a guy who made $8m the following year. Unless I'm supposed to believe that he got drastically better over that 1 year.

I hope Naz got the going rate,
I like the kid, he didn’t appear to be full of himself and he seemed to care a lot. Not all of our hot shots act that way.

Agreed and I should have made note of this. AAU is essentially a clearing house for talent and coaches work as agents for these players. They pimp these kids out.
The shoe / apparel companies come in and give the various programs money and they start directing kids in the direction that they want to go so the kid stays with them and continues wearing their stuff.
Football is done differently. There is still the influence of the shoe/apparel companies but it’s just not as dirty as basketball.
Lets just assume that players (or family) gets paid. Lets also agree that it’s not immoral. It’s getting paid for services.
With that foundation, it comes down to how well you execute without getting caught. For Will Wade to be on tape uttering the words that are reported, it’s embarrassing. He should know better than to say anything remotely close to what’s been reported. Rookie mistake.
I want a guy that operates in stealth mode

there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that
Paying athletes a monthly stipend so they can afford an upgraded quality of life, while in college, is fine. I believe most college sports fans are accepting of this provision.
Offering kids hundreds of thousands of dollars to entice them to richer schools should never be allowed.

I feel the reason the Bama roundball fans are pissing & moaning is that the University spent 80% of their "signing bonus pool & Dodge Ownership Program " on the football program. :
