One of the things I've enjoyed the most about the SEC Rant since the beginning of the Will Wade saga is Bama fans complaining about LSU paying players. There's not a better example of the pot calling the kettle black than that.

EXACTLY. They cry about other teams paying players, meanwhile their football program bought and paid for a decades worth of #1 classes.

But without that 300k to Naz, however much to Smart, and however much to whoever else we had to pay, do you think LSU is in the Sweet 16?

Surely these kids from all over the country (Smart excluded) weren't knocking down the doors to get into LSU. Hell, how often does a big recruit from Louisiana even come to LSU?

anyone who believes this is either incredibly naive or a blind homer.

What's he supposed to say - "sure, I got paid?" All these guys will deny, which is the smart thing to do.

But that doesn't mean it didn't happen - just that they won't admit to it. Just like when a defendant pleads "not guilty." Note that I'm NOT, NOT, NOT equating getting paid to play ball to committing a crime, I'm just saying sometimes it's in people's self-interest to deny certain things - but just because they deny doesn't mean it didn't occur.

You gave to pay to play, no doubt. But no player is getting 300k cash. More like several 10k payments, favors, jobs and houses for parents.

But yeah, you can't play it straight and compete in basketball, it's dirty

The Bama board claims LSU is offering Watford $250,000!

I suppose this is how they justify paying for Louisiana football players. Point the finger at everybody else. That fan base is the most hypocritical in college football.

exactly. Wade immediately landed 5-stars from NJ and FL, and 4-stars from CT, FL, and Baton Rouge. To a non-basketball school.

How do you think that happens?

When people deny by saying “it didn’t happen,” as opposed to “I didn’t do it” or “they didn’t do it,” I think their denial is false.

The NBA's dumb arse one and done rule is mostly to blame for this. Not saying there wasn't cheating going on before, but kids who should be making millions out of high school are stuck pretending to play school for 3 months. They don't give a shite about the school, and the consequences for them are pretty non existent, as long as they don't get 100% caught during the season. They are long gone before shite hits the fan, if it ever does.

A HS buddy of mine was a recruit and big time AAU player and this stuff happened then, but the NBA rule change certainly caused it to get much worse.

Of course not, but as I said previously, if Vitale and others are going to take people like Pitino at their word then we can take Naz at his.

No doubt. As long as there is college athletics, and incredibly stupid rules, there will be cheating. College basketball is probably the dirtiest, and unclean. There really isn't much incentive for the kids to hide it because they know they are in and out. Football is cheating, without a doubt also. They just have to cover their tracks. The NCAA won't conclude an investigation in the 3 months a kid is there, but they will conclude one in the 3 years a football player is on campus, so the football staff and player have soooo much more to lose. Only the staff/school stand to lose in basketball.

Reid’s girlfriend played here at the same time

Days has family in Louisiana

Williams was dropped by everyone after the sexual assault accusations

Waters was recruited by him at VCU but he ended up signing with Georgetown. Got out of his letter of intent when Thompson got fired.

Smart is from BR

When you take a moment to consider those facts, it’s not as impossible as you’d think

I think you should represent LSU if the NCAA comes knocking. I believe they got paid, but that's just my personal opinion. I also don't care that they got paid. This season was awesome. But if you can cast some doubt as to why all those players came to LSU, then that should be plenty good enough, assuming there is no paper trail.
