Cantrelle gets my vote. He was a bad arse. I am trying to remember someone from a long time ago that bit into a beer mug or ate some glass or something like that? Anyone remember who he was?

I think it was cantrelle,..there was a tradition of shaving married guys or something to that effect. When they came in for him, he said I'm gonna let y'all do this without a fight. But I'm gonna remember every one of you. They didn't shave him.

Tim Rossovich; he recently passed away. He once challenged Mike Ditka to a contest to see who could open the most bottles of beer with his teeth (this was in the days when they weren't wist off tops). Rossovich opened 10 bottles, drank all the beers, and then chewed up the last bottle in front of Dikta, who just walked away...

Cantrelle was allegedly an enforcer for the Dixie Mafia on the MS Gulf Coast for quite some time. I’ve heard stories I’ll not divulge here that are pretty extraordinary.

In talking to several former players Art Cantrelle was by far a tough SOB.
Back in the say when you walked into the gym at Louisiana Training Institute (LTI -boys reform school), a large portrait of both Cantrelle and LaBruzzo hung on the wall. Both played there while being adjudicated.
Old Coach Fred Lindsay, who coached both, said Art was the toughest he'd seen. Said he was never a problem until he got drunk.
Every fall they'd load those kids up on a bus and travel from one reform school to another in various states and play a game. Went all over the southwest and southeast.
Said one night Cantrelle snuck off, stole beer from campers across a lake and got caught and beat the crap out of several adults.

My mom dated Art back in the day... My dad knew him - they were, apparently, some crazy SOB's.

He was the running back when I first started going to the games.

I've heard all the Art Cantrelle stories but I'd put my money on George Atiyeh. He was a 2-time All SEC nose tackle, SEC Heavyweight wrestling champion and Wrestler of the Year. He also had about 60 pounds on Cantrelle. His senior year he he had a buzz cut and a thick black mustache/goatee along with a nose that started above his eyebrows. I sat across from him at lunch a few times in the athletic dorm and I swear he could scare paint off a wall. I went to a fund raiser about 10 years ago and struck up a long conversation about SEC football with HOF center Dwight Stephenson who played at Alabama. He told me Atiyeh was the strongest player he ever played against in college or the NFL.

Legendary for kicking anyone's arse. Not as tough and bad arse as Cantrelle but it's close.

Sammy Martin.
Sammy was a tough guy, but he did not go looking for fights and overall he was pretty laid back.....liked his weed though.
I remember Jeff Wickersham used o get in a fair amount of scrapes

My money would be on Art Cantrelle.

Met him about 20 year ago. big guy, quiet. For my money te scariest guy to ever have to face down would have been Roland Barbay. Roland had long black curly hair and a full beard. He was big tough and scary looking......nicest guy you would ever meet though went to high school with him at HC in NOLA. If you were with Roland and a fight broke out, you had nothing to worry about

Chris Danton told me he and Art were at the pass time lounge with two nice girls. Two thugs from across the river challenged them to a fight. Art said they were just out on a date and didn’t want any trouble. Then one of the river thugs flipped one of the girl’s poney tail in front of her face. Chris got up as fast as he could, but Art had already lept across the table from his sitting position and knocked the thugs heads together like two coconuts, before Chris could stand upright. Dudes were out cold.
