Year 1, this team was horrible. Year 2, team was better, but not good. If we are expecting steady progression, year 3 should be a team in the tournament. So I agree that if he can’t get this team to perform in year 3, then he should be gone. Also, years 1 and 2, personally I’m willing to give coaches the benefit of the doubt. Year 3 and on, there are no excuses.

Its also the lack of adjustments.

Like we made Zero adjustments to Alabama after losing the first game. Lost by nearly the exact same score

It took trailing Florida by 20 before he finally figured out we could not defend them man to man and switched to a zone

This is fair. I’m gonna let him actually put together the 2025 roster before I blow the horn, considering he was somewhat handicapped in year one.

But again, fair. I agree he’s a good floor coach & if he’s gonna have success here he will have to put together a complete roster.

If more of his critics posted stuff like this instead of “hah we lost!” / “worst coach to ever coach!” we’d probably be able to have infinitely more substantial conversations about the future of the program on this board.

Solid thread dude.

The end all be all of whether or not we have success with McMahon is the guys suiting up.. I genuinely believe he got damn near the most out of this roster. Obviously recruiting and roster construction is the responsibility of the coach, so I’m not giving him a free pass on it.

I cannot emphasize enough that we NEED a good portal. If our portal is trash the core that is here needs to make a massive jump (which I doubt will happen).

The only upside I am holding on to is the fact that MM was 17-14 in his first season at Murray St then 16-17 in his second season then after that had single digit losses in his next 5 years.

So in theory next year should be much better, but It seems like something is missing in his teams. Its as if the urgency isn't there or something.

They start off in the SEC 3-1 then lose 3 in a row, win a game, drop another 3 in a row, then they beat South Carolina & Kentucky back to back then with 6 games left they go 3-3 in that stretch. There isn't consistent play.

LSU is ranked 30th in recruiting with 2 4 stars coming in, but you need experienced players to win. He really does need to work the transfer portal and there are some decent players out there. If he doesn't bring in anything special out of the transfer portal its going to be the same thing in 2024-25

I’ve noted his trajectory at Murray, and I think he knows how to build a team — but IMO what’s “missing” is post play.

Baker’s one of the best 7ft shooters I’ve seen, but that’s about all he was good for this season. I’d rather a guy do at least two things well than literally one thing excellently.

His guys aren’t generally lacking a will to compete — what we’re lacking is physicality & bodies. We need a Baker sized dude who plays like Hannibal.

Honestly think we will be okay at guard, but we’re going to need *some* kind of presence inside. A guy like Thiero at UK quickly changes the look of a team like this.

Uh ... what?!?

LSU has no men's NCAA Basketball championships.
LSU has never appeared in the Championship game.
LSU has not appeared in the Final 4 in 18 years.

LSU is 58th in All-Time wins, behind 5 (soon to be 7) other SEC teams.

LSU hasn't produced a 1st Team All-NBA player in 30 years.

LSU is not a men's basketball brand any more than Kentucky is a football brand.

there was significant improvement this year. I have no quarrel with McMahon. as long as things keep heading the right direction and progress is mae. a disaster last year, a 500 SEC record this year. maybe towards the top 4 in the league next year and a tourney bid.

I know its the portal era, and every year is new, and programs are not built over time with a process, they are totally reworked every year. maybe that's true. maybe the system doesn't matter, and its a fresh start every year, not a gradual building of a foundation.

maybe. but maybe not. last year we thought Mizzou had an insta-rebuild and were ahead of us. not anymore, they are a fricking disaster. they are back to square one. while we have made progress. maybe mcmahon is building a "culture" of sustained accountability and success. maybe not. college sports are different now, its early and this new transfer and NIL thing isn't solved yet.

I saw we appreciate the improvement and expect more. we appear to be on the upswing.

I miss wade too.

It’s hard to mention that name without starting a sh*tshow.
One experience advantage I think he had over McMahon was that he had already taken over a new program that had fired their head coach.

I dissagree with most on here. I think his coaching is fine. It is fair to question the talent he is bringing in from this point forward imo. If we improve year 3 and make NCAA tourney I am happy with the progression, but would really like to start seeing us in the mix for upper level SEC talent. So far that has been the gap imo. We have a lot of guys that would get pt at other schools and possibly start, but I don’t think we have any guys that would be any other decent SEC team’s first or second option.

At LSU then. And if he could handle a ball or move at all & wasn’t playing center instead of shooting forward, he might put up 30 PPG lol.

He just can’t handle a ball… or move… or play defense… or rebound …or post up …or dribble …or catch …or pass.

McNeese's 19-game improvement ties the biggest single season turnaround in college basketball history.

Absolutely.

3 is enough.

Turn it completely around next season or gtfo.

Pump Nuts and MA's are loving the loss to All-Powerful North Texas.

Just like with every defeat, all the weak eunuchs be up in here spewing excuses right and left......

Damn good post with a single exception-LSU is most certainly not "an above average basketball brand."

Agree, I’ve been pretty positive but last night was a continuation of the bad games all year. Next year it’s NCAA Tournement or bust! NIT won’t cut it. Contrary to believe on this board, LSU can be a basketball school and has been in the past. Time to get back there.

And a terrible recruiter to compound the problem.
