There is no other option.

For decades ND was viewed as THE school for Catholics. It has less of a stranglehold on Catholics today, but it hasn’t disappeared. There are 65 million Catholics in the US, not to mention many non Catholics who support ND. There were those in Ruston/Monroe area when I growing up that supported ND over LSU or other closer schools because of the religious connection. We aren’t anywhere near the same footing as them on fan draw. That’s just the reality.

IF those numbers are correct, looks like LSU would do just fine as an independent. And as I have posted a couple of times, LSU football draws more TV viewers than Notre Dame does...using last year's bad LSU football team numbers BTW. Of course, ND's opponent's aren't as high profile,etc, etc.

The main problem I would see is who would broadcast LSU games. Fox is in contract with the Big 10 and the Big 12...ABC is obviously in with the SEC..CBS signed a Big 10 football contract through the end of this decade. NBC is obviously in a contract with ND. Of the over the air networks, the only avenue I would see for LSU is for NBC to add them to their slate. Notre Dame plays most of their games in the daytime...LSU wants to play at night. I think LSU could make up the money BUT they would have to find an outlet for their football games..

ND is a bigger brand. We don't need to be dishonest. LSU is not ND. We are a National Brand but are not ND.

I think we could fairly easily get a short-term deal, say $75m+ or so per year, with CBS or some combination of TV partners… let calmer heads take over after Sankey and then right back in the SEC in a couple years

I don’t want that. I want SEC, but if they kick us out we don’t have a choice.

I don't know about "a lot" but certainly would drop some as I said in my OP where I mentioned the lack of quality of some of ND's opponents bringing them down. However, LSU would gain some IF they came up with decent opponents playing at night all the time. One problem Notre Dame has is they play quite a few daytime games which simply don't draw as well as night games. Not disagreeing with you, just a lot of factors involved. The main issue as an independent would be getting an over-the-air network to show your games. LSU's contract could be much less than the SEC's contract and still come out ahead...no sharing with 15 other teams as the SEC has to do now.

First, the deal with the ACC includes Notre Dame football being required to play at least 5 opponents from the ACC every year. That means the ACC benefits from 2-3 games a year where the ACC team is the home team and ACC owns the media rights.

Basketball and baseball media rights are almost worthless for an independent program. You need the conference affiliation there to have a solid enough schedule, especially once everyone else is in the meat of their own conference schedules.

Practically zero chance that any ACC invitation to LSU isn't contingent on football being included because the ACC knows that quality football programs is the only thing that will keep the conference alive long term. ACC is already strong in basketball. They don't NEED us there. Baseball doesn't move the needle enough on conference revenue. Football is the only sport that makes LSU membership beneficial for the ACC to invite us.

If LSU wants to go independent in football, then it means we'd probably have to join the Sun Belt for all other sports
