re: LSU MBB has two top tier players and a really good supporting cast

Not having even a decent point guard has hurt our team tremendously
the last several years. An average team with a really good point guard becomes a good team and they are a bad team with a bad point guard.
Unfortunately that’s what we’ve seen

but I think this team may have it.
Still VERY MUCH TBD. Last night was good step. But November has always been good for MM. Even in losses, his teams have generally played well in the Thanksgiving tournaments.
Last season things looked to be much better with a decisive road win @ Kansas St (at that point, only MM's 3rd road win in his LSU career). The next game they barely beat an awful Charleston So. team.
The question is can they sustain an improve upon this level of play? The next 3 opponents are far inferior. That puts LSU in somewhat of a "no win" position because anything less than a dominant blowout will be cause for a bit of concern. The next real benchmark will be the Thanksgiving tournament.

McMahon is a different guy on the sidelines this year . Both with the players and even the referees. I don’t believe he as gotten a technical in 3 years and in the first two games he seemed close to getting one . It’s nice to see him show some signs of energy this year and I’m optimistic this may be a team that can compete with the middle of the pack of the conference this year
But I don't know... 10-8? I'm just a fan, and realist as well.
I've watched 4+ decades of LSU MBB, we have a chance this season.

Thank you for starting a thread to give those of us who are fatigued and over the football shite show
Went to the game last night and at the very least they are more disciplined. Not many dumb turnovers and much better post play. We seem to have some size this year. Reed has been coming off the bench and had a knee brace on which tells me he’s still not quite 100% but he got going in the 2nd half last night and ended with 15. I think he’ll be our best player when 100%
The jury is still out on if we have the talent to match up with the rest of the sec. Almost all of our transfers are from small schools which makes me hesitant for now. We’ll learn a lot against Texas tech December 7th. But, as I said at the very least they look more organized and confident handling the ball and they absolutely dominated the glass last night.

Why in the hell would an LSU fan hate posts with positive comments about the team? All I am speaking to is the difference between his other teams and this one. Any one with half a brain can see that Thomas is the best PG he's had. That they are taking better care of the ball. Hitting the boards. Moving the ball. Playing defense. Shooting well. Why do you hate that? LSU outrebounded the 2nd biggest team in the NCAA. That's a positive. That's something they couldn't do last year against smaller teams. We had 21 assists on 31 made shots. That is impressive I don't care who you are playing. That means it wasn't just one on one basketball. I too want to see them against better competition but at least the product they are putting on the court is outperforming previous teams so far.

The question is can they sustain an improve upon this level of play?
However, there is something now that is different IMO. It's just me. I have a good feeling (and not blind hope).

LAST NIGHT they took much better care of the ball. Before that they had 15 TOs (UCF) and 16 (Tarleton St). Thomas is not the one turning it over. That means can the other guys limit the TOs like they did last night? Or was last night an outlier? We'll see

Hitting the boards
They are 9th nationally in total rebounding rate (%). That's great. But it's still a small sample size.
quote:

That's a significant increase from MM's previous teams.
They've played about as well as one could hope for (minus the TOs until last night) in a VERY small sample size. Offensively they've been efficient (12th nationally). That should give some reason for optimism.

This team seems to have some nice pieces. Thomas is a difference maker. I love the way he controls the tempo when he is running the point. We have some shot makers and size around the rim. We also have veteran players as well. We will see how it plays out, but I can see us making it to the middle of the pack in the SEC.
SEC is a meat grinder. Let's see how this team gels and progresses. TTU will be a good gauge for this team. So far this team plays with a lot of energy and purpose.
Thomas has to stay healthy and out of foul trouble.

What do you all think about our 2 guards? I'm not convinced Mackinnon is going to be able to do much in SEC play, so I really hope King can step up. He looks athletic enough to guard SEC 2's and has some size to him. PJ Carter maybe can give some minutes???? Are we going to see anything from Zipper?
Other than the 2 spot, I agree with the previous posts that Sutton, Miller/Reed, Nwoko will give great minutes at the 3-5 spots. And I LOVE Tamba! Love players like him that just give valuable effort and the dirty work for the team.

Really hate these posts. LSU basketball has been dead for a hot minute. Lets wait and see what happens in Jan.
Some of you choose to live in a pit of misery, and it's quite sad.

Has nothing to do with being positive. I have enjoyed the improvement but these posts have been made every season after a few games and then the team turns out to be hot garbage. Which is why I have said can we wait and see what happens until Jan. We have not played a good team yet and this Coach has not fielded a good time to earn the benefit of the doubt that the team is as good as it looks through the first few games against bad competition.

Having watched the bench and the behind the scenes videos, this team seems much more engaged, confident, and locked in than previous teams. That's the benefit of an experience-laden team. Will also help along the young guys like Reece and Miller.

MacKinnon was guarded tight early (due to game 1) so he deferred to Sutton who torched UNO. Never got into a rhythm after that, but contributed in other ways.
Tamba is like a bigger more athletic Dji Bailey. Hustles and is unafraid to drive inside. Haven't seen him shoot the 3 so he might not be good, but to his credit he isn't trying them and doesn't need to on this team.
The only weakness I see is that we only have 2 legit point guards like Wade had in his last year. I wonder if Zipper can play the point if needed.

The concern with Nwoko is fouls. He's productive. But it's a matter of if that production can be given over the course of 28 or so consistent minutes? Or 15 inconsistent minutes because of foul trouble.

It took about 5 minutes of game time vs. UCF to see that he plays with more energy than everyone else. He's an Emmitt Williams type of guy. Very little offensive skill, but makes up for it with effort. Again though, the worry with him is foul trouble.
As long as Thomas is healthy I think the offense will be more efficient compared to last season. Perimeter defense still remains a big worry. Particularly considering there aren't a lot of "erasers" inside like Chest and Collins were last year. When UNO had success, it was often penetrating the lane late in the shot clock after decent initial defense by LSU

Beyond the obvious upgrades in talent, MM's demeanor on the sidelines may be one of the biggest differences. Like others have said, he's been fiery. Chewing on the refs. Pumped up and motivating his team if the other team is forced to call a timeout. Very different feel.
It also seems like we may have 27 members on the coaching staff. The bench behind the bench is jam packed with staff. Maybe its the one on one coaching!? We have enough staff for it.
This is his moment to build momentum. Football is a dumpster fire and baseball is a ways away. Win a couple of games and the fans will come out.

I like LSU’s post players this year more than any other CMM led team. Thomas is also the best true PG we have had since Tremont Waters. There are weaknesses on this team, however.
Like everyone else has stated, Im curious to see how things go against a legit team. So far so good though.

I've seen enough from Thomas where I believe he can be just that.
I have not seen enough from anyone else to be so confident. I think Sutton shows some promise. Mckinnon was great first game and terrible last night so not sure about him.
And I don't expect to be able to really confirm that on any of the other players until we play some good competition. UNO's win over what is likely not a very good TCU team does not convince me that they are that barometer.
