Here is a great clip of Dale chewing out Jose. A classic.

The other thing about Jose was every once in a while he could pull off a simply dominating performance. I remember going to his very first game (I think at home against Loyola of Chicago with Alfrederick "the Great" Hughes). It was his and John Williams' first game as Tigers. Jose scored like 22 points, outscoring Williams who was a 5-star PF out of Los Angeles. I remember thinking, "Wow! We've got 2 great FR bigs!", but he was inconsistent.

I remember that after spending time in the Dominican Republic and playing basketball with some of the locals, including Jose, that Greg Cook is the one who spotted Jose and called Dale.

Jose just seemed like an all-around great guy. I know he got drafted by the Mavs after the 88-89 season but I lost touch with how long he stayed in the league.

Can't blame Dale for that one. He could not have made it any clearer.

Definitely Dale's fault. The discipline to follow in-game instructions is not an accident of nature. A good coach builds that discipline in practice - Dale didn't.

If I remember correctly Brown told the team, "No one throw it to Jose, and Jose, if you get it don't shoot."

Dale never told them not to pass it to Jose. However, he did tell Jose not to shoot.....like 3 times. The final time, as they were about the break the huddle, he looked directly at Jose and said, "Don't shoot the ball".

I played pickup ball against Jose on a few occasions while at LSU. He had sharp elbows and wasn't afraid to use them. I took one to the side of the head that had me seeing stars. The only way you could stop him was to keep him out of the lane. If he got the ball on the box, it was over. He was less accurate if you could get him to take the shot from more than 8 feet away. Trying to keep him out of the lane was dangerous, though...

I remember that. I think Dale’s exact words were. “No horse shite shots Jose!”

I did a few LSU charters years ago, a couple during the NCAA tournament, the players loved Dale but the dressing downs and arse chewings he'd give them behind closed doors and off camera(impossible today,) were vicious, wouldn't go over today and I don't think the cream puff egomaniac college athletes of today could handle it either, you could hear him going at it in flight through the cockpit door

Can you imagine the athletes of today getting a verbal assault from Bobby Knight or Dale Brown? The ole transfer portal would be spinning like a slot machine at the Casino. Hell I remember our baseball and basketball coaches in high school chewing our asses when we messed up. Just a part of playing sports growing up for me.

wiki's entry on Vargas

Vargas was drafted in the second round of the 1988 National Basketball Association Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He never played in the NBA, though, instead leaving to play in the Italian league.[2]

He played for Maccabi Tel Aviv from 1991-1993.

He played with Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama.

Damn I had no clue he was drafted in the 2nd round. Sounds like he passed up a nice payday there to go overseas.

I recall passing him in the quadrangle and thinking that he was the most evil looking dude I'd ever seen. He had these weird looking ears and bloodshot eyes. By all accounts, he was a good guy though.

Wasn't this game the game up at Georgetown, and not Kentucky? I'm pretty sure I remember it correctly.

these young whipper snappers with their air buds, vapes, and anal bleaching have no idea who Jose Vargas is. I believe it was G'Town and that was a fun couple years there.

Fun times. Basketball, in general, was better back then
