I still have a VHS tape of that game believe it or not. Thanks for triggering my post-traumatic stress disorder.

Fond memories of Vargas. He was quite the character. From hostage negotiator Jose talking down the nutjob that entered Mike's cage, to the beatdown at Church's Chicken, some great stories during his time here.

One evening Vargas had stopped at a Church's Fried Chicken outlet near campus. A group of five teenagers there began taunting him, and one of them took a liking to the chain Vargas wore around his neck. A poke in the chest, a yank on the necklace—on which hung a ring given Vargas by his mother—and Vargas reacted instinctively, tackling the young man and crashing with him through a plate-glass window. The other teenagers fled as Vargas pinned his assailant to the ground, removed his own belt and began choking the fellow with it.

I'll hopefully get it there one day. It might take a while to get what I need as I don't have anything for the transfer.
I have a few other games that I could possibly upload if they are not there yet.

Vargas came in as a freshman as basically a project, by his senior year he turned himself into a decent player especially on the defensive end.

If I remember correctly Brown told the team, "No one throw it to Jose, and Jose, if you get it don't shoot." He also wanted a shot with under four seconds left.
They inbounded, threw it to Jose, and he shot immediately. They fouled on the rebound(?) And lost when the other team sank free throws.
Classic Dale Brown!

he also saved a guy from being Mike's next meal.

Vargas was one of my all-time favorite LSU BB players. He played when I was in college. He was a key part of the 1987 Elite 8 team. He'd come off the bench to provide muscle whenever the other team started getting too physical with Nikita Wilson. Had a decent year in 1988, too.

The best one was, after Fess Irvin lost the ball because he couldn't find and open man.
Dale yelled, Jose, Jose, don't stand there like a statue, move your lazy arse.
Another was, during a timeout the TV announcer said let's listen in to Dale's instruction to the team.
Where Dale was saying, "I don't want you guys taking any horse shite shots".
The announcer says, I think Dale means no carless shots.

Solid guy. Really nice person.
After his LSU career he played european basketball and lived next door to me off GSRI.
Whenever he was in town he would play with all the kids in the apartment complex. I still remember stealing a wooden phone cable barrel and we were balancing on it while sitting spinning through the grass and he got up on it too.
I would help him set up a baseball field in the empty lot using paper sacks for bases. The kids loved it. He was all-in when playing with them.
He got robbed while he was out of town and they stole all his LSU rings and matchbox collection he had from places all over the world.
When he moved he asked to borrow my truck which was a tiny little datsun 5-speed. if I live to be 100 i will never get the image of him driving it.. His knees were almost touching the windshield.
One of the nicest people I've ever known. I hope he's had good life. He deserved it.

I remember that game all too well. Was just too funny how that worked out. One of my favorites players also. Physical player. I still remember Kentucky's Center in one year didn't want anything to do with Vargas when they were on the court together.

What kind of dumbass teenagers thought it was a good idea to bully a 6'10" man? A very athletic one at that.

In the Summer of 1987 I was set to graduate. I needed a 4000 level humanities class and pulled a class card for Sociology "The Family". I told the girl working the table it was my last semester.
She literally called me back as I was walking away and said "I could thank her later". She took my class card and gave me another.
I show up to Sociology "The family" and learn it is a class set up for athletes only. Sammy Martin, Kevin Guidry and Jose' were all in the class with their assigned tutors.
Jose' was very interested in lesbian family dynamics and repeatedly asked questions like "who is the financial boss in those families" and "how do they divide house work chores". He never failed to ask a lesbian question in every class.
That is how I remember Jose'. The dude was pure greatness.

I didn't realize I was still this popular.

I remember that very well. Can't blame Dale for that one. He could not have made it any clearer. although I was not laughing at the time.

Great times as a LSU basketball fan. Jose Vargas was one of my favorites. He wasn't much on the offensive side but Jose could play some defense. He was a black belt in karate also I do believe.

ShermanTXTiger,
I remember redoing my entire schedule for the Spring of 1987 and spending an entire workday, 9-5, pulling cards for classes. That must have been the last time we pulled cards because I think we were calling in schedules by the next fall.
Oh the times!

Vargas was a very large man. Why would anyone, even if they were drunk, start taunting him and poking him in the chest.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
