Is there really anyone here who doesn't have Vitello as their first choice?

The dude is 42 years old and young and hungry. He took Tennessee in his third year (excluding 2020) to a high national seed. frickING TENNESSEE!

This guy would absolutely dominate at LSU. Everyone else on the list, other than the East Carolina coach, is meh in my opinion.

I would be surprised if Scott Woodward even has Vitello anywhere on his list.

He is my first choice for sure. I give it a 10% chance of happening.

So if they don’t make it to Omaha, you’d still want him as head coach?

I feel that you’re being influenced by the fact it is this year. Many coaches brought their team to national prominence out of nowhere. They just didn’t do so the year LSU is looking for a coach.

I get the Vitello love. I really do. In fact, he’s my #1 Choice.

But my god some are over-the-top about it. I don’t think there’s a CBB coach in history with such a short resume that has gotten this much fan love.

He’s probably gonna be a great coach. But his HC resume is a very real thing, and at this point in his career it’s really, really short.

Like I said, I would love for LSU to hire Vitello. I’m just saying I totally understand if we don’t.

He's had a great season, but I would be surprised if Woodward's first choice is a guy with only 3 1/2 years of experience. For a job as prestigious as LSU's, I would think you want someone with a proven record of success.

What he's done at Tennessee is impressive, but we've seen flashes in the pan before that can't maintain the success long term.

That's not to say he isn't worth taking that risk, but the risk is there that he's another flash in the pan.

He's likely #2 on my list behind McDonnell.

Woodward may have his sights set higher but I love how some people equate Vitello to a random no name who happens to have a good team at Eastern Kentucky or something.

How many people wanted Eric Bakich after the 2019 CWS? What about today in 2021?

What was Smoke's success before LSU?

I guess the concern is if he’s another Nick Mingione.

He had Kentucky in a Super his first year and has really petered off.

let me play devil's advocate here

Vitello won't ever match O'Sullivan's resume (6 CWS appearances over 9 seasons, one title, one runner-up) so why is he a no brainer over KOS?

I think Vitello is a good coach but is there anything to indicate he will sustain this level of success at Tennessee? His team this year is loaded with upper-classmen.

eta If you recall, Nick Mangione had a really good team a few seasons ago at Kentucky. How is Vitello any different? We don't know.

He is the Tom Herman pick of baseball. I am good with or without him. I think there are better choices out there.

Tenneesee under Delmonico was formidable for a long time.

I like Vitello but it's not like this program is totally devoid of any history.

On another note the ageism associated with coaching hires now is crazy.

I would welcome Vitello but there are some more proven coaches that have won titles and win year in and year out that better have said no to us first.
